Mobile phone manufacturer
Nokia has joined forces with
Spectrum Interactive to conduct a two month trial of
free wireless internet access services in 26 locations around central London, most of which will be situated near to major shopping hubs in the city's West End.
The service is designed to boost the use of Wi-Fi for mobile device connectivity and will offer download speeds of 'up to' 20Mbps (Megabits per second). If successful the service could be
rolled out to 1,000 sites around London.
Customers will not be asked to register or sign-in to access the service, which is useful but could cause a conflict with the
Digital Economy Act, especially if that access is abused for unlawful file sharing (piracy).
