TP-LINK, a global provider of broadband ISP routers and other business networking products, has just released its latest
2011 Connectivity Report and discovered that 51% of the 1,000 UK adults surveyed want faster internet access, 77% aren't satisfied with the speeds they get today and 32% don't even know what their current speed is.
Eric Wang, TP-LINK's UK Country Manager, said:
"The reality is that so many consumers just accept the network packages offered by their ISP and don't understand how limiting some of the offers can be.
This research [also] serves to underline the importance of the connected home. On average with people accessing the internet via 4 devices at any one time, having a robust home network has never been more important."
TP-LINK 2011 Connectivity Report (Highlights)
* 31% claimed to be on an ISP package that offered download speeds of up to 10Mbps.
* 59% didn't know what their router's speed was, although in fairness that's an odd question because routers are often home to several different speeds / network types.
* 37% will use the internet for product browsing and research ahead of Christmas but only 3% will make a purchase.
* 46% use the internet to interact with friends and or family (e.g. email, Skype, Facebook, Twitter etc.).
* 47% of women prefer a wireless network, while 34% of men prefer a wired only solution.
The study also found that, on average,
4.6 devices are connected to any UK household network at any time. This includes tablets, Smartphone's, video game consoles and printers.
A separate study of 3,000 employees by
Mozy, an online storage service, has claimed that 22% were never more than 10 feet away from a device with internet connectivity and 23% will work from home at least once a week.
