BTOpenreach, which works to provide all ISPs with equality of access to the "
last mile" of BT's local UK telecoms network, has today revealed the next batch of
178 telephone exchange upgrades for its superfast 'up to' 40Mbps
Fibre-to-the-Cabinet ( FTTC ) and 100Mbps
Fibre-to-the-Premises ( FTTP ) based internet access technologies.
The new list (
phases 8a, 8b and 9a), when taken by itself, will cover more than
1.8 million homes and businesses (premises). The majority of the 178 new exchanges will be
enabled in 2012 and, once completed, should represent about 80% of BT's "
commercial fibre footprint". This footprint aims to cover 66% of UK premises by the end of
2015 2014.
Olivia Garfield, CEO of BTOpenreach, said:
"We continue to make tremendous strides with our fibre programme. Super-fast broadband is already within reach of more than six million premises today and we are on track to pass ten million premises next year [ISPr ED: 40% coverage of UK homes].
Our ambitions do not stop there. We will make fibre available to two thirds of UK premises by the end of 2014 and we want to go even further. It is important that as many premises as possible have access to fibre and so we will bid for the BDUK funds that are available.
Our experience in deploying fibre networks at scale and the fact that our open, wholesale network allows competition to thrive in an area makes Openreach an ideal partner for these local/regional broadband initiatives."
It's worth pointing out that 17 of the new locations are in
Cornwall, which will be upgraded to "
fibre" as part of the
Superfast Cornwall project. The total list of 161 exchanges (minus Cornwall's 17) can be found below.

BT is currently investing
£2.5bn into its national UK deployment of fibre optic broadband services. A number of UK ISPs are already offering superfast FTTC based broadband services, although BT-Infinity and PlusNet are two of the cheapest with prices that start from just £16.49 a month.
It's worth pointing out that the top speed of BT's FTTC technology will be boosted from 40Mbps to
80Mbps over the coming months. In additional BT recently launched its new truly fibre optic 100Mbps FTTP technology, which will also see a speed boost up to
300Mbps in 2012 (
FTTP commercial launch details).
