A new high-level report from Assembly Research will be published today, which examines the challenging future of the UK’s full fibre broadband market for alternative networks (altnets) and highlights the potentially positive impacts of nexfibre’s recent £2bn move to acquire rival operator Netomnia (here).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today notified communication providers of their intention to introduce geographic connection charges on high-capacity Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) lines, which provide dedicated point-to-point data connectivity between sites for businesses, from 1st July 2026.

A new report from consultancy firm FarrPoint has confirmed that the Swansea Bay City Deal’s Digital Infrastructure Programme in Wales has so far secured £44.8m of investment in digital connectivity during 2024–25, which went towards various broadband and dark fibre roll-out projects.

Abingdon-based alternative network Gigaclear, which have built a full fibre (FTTP) network across 618,000 premises in rural parts of England and is home to 170,000 customers, has published their annual accounts after lenders recently took control of the business (here). The results reveal that their c.£963m senior debt facility was revised to a principal amount of £575m (shrinking by £388m).

Broadband-based live TV streaming service Freely, which is backed by the major UK TV broadcasters and is an evolution – not (yet) a replacement – for the existing Freeview platform (inc. Freeview Play and Freesat), has revealed that they now have well over 1 million users (up from 500,000 from Sep-Dec 2025) and the number of Freeview homes in 2034 is forecast to fall to 860,000.

A new YouGov survey, which was conducted during late May 2026 with an unspecified number of UK respondents, has claimed that 82% of Britons believe water companies should be run in the public sector, with 70% saying the same of energy companies. But only 38% said the same for broadband “internet and phone providers” (16% didn’t know and 47% felt they should continue to be run by the private sector).

Rochdale-based UK broadband ISP Zen Internet has confirmed that MS3’s alternative full fibre (FTTP) network, which has so far covered 215,000 premises (Ready for Service) in the North of England (mostly in Hull and Lincolnshire), is now live on their service for business and consumers after being almost fully integrated following last year’s wholesale deal (here).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today notified Communication Providers (broadband ISPs etc.) about a further extension on some of their existing offers for Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) lines and 10Gbps Cablelink products under their Equinox incentives, while also introducing three new FTTP offers (some of which target Virgin Media areas).

Consultancy firm Cluttons and polling company YouGov have published the results from a new survey of 2,055 UK people and 108 MPs, which among other things found that 27% of consumers are frustrated with their home broadband (Wi-Fi) connection every week and 42% have difficulty accessing 4G or 5G mobile outside half the time or more.

French benchmarking firm nPerf has today published the results from an unusual new study, which compared the fastest average mobile broadband download speeds (4G and 5G) of 20 countries with a similar size (land area) to Poland. The results saw the United Kingdom rank 3rd with an average speed of 105.8Mbps.

Customers of alternative rural full fibre broadband ISP County Broadband are to be migrated to the Truespeed brand over the next few months. The move follows last year’s merger of the two altnets (here), which at the time created a single operator covering 177,000 premises (RFS) and 40,000 customers. Since then Truespeed has also merged with Freedom Fibre (here), but that’s another story.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today revealed that one million people have now used their upgraded Map Your Mobile Postcode Checker since it launched a year ago (here). The service was enhanced to better match people’s real-world experiences of 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) performance and signal strength across EE, Three UK, Vodafone and O2.

A new legal action portal called Starlink Sucks has been launched by Nik Fox, a UK broadcast technology expert, which accuses the popular satellite broadband provider of hitting consumers with a “predatory … hardware trap” — an allegedly “calculated corporate strategy” where subscribers are said to have been locked into “expensive, non-transferable physical equipment” before their service plans are stripped away.
