Alternative network ISP Fibrus, which is building a full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across parts of Northern Ireland and Cumbria (England), has launched an unusual new campaign that takes a swipe at its competitors by inviting their angry customers to let out their frustrations in a rage room (i.e. a place where you go to smash up poor defenceless electrical devices etc.).

Shropshire-based independent ISP Aquiss has announced the return of its popular 6-month half-price promotion on selected full fibre broadband packages via the Openreach and CityFibre networks. But the promotion will only be available for new customers to take until 30th June 2026.

A team of researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, England, has “uncovered a hidden property of light” that allows it to controllably twist, spin and behave differently – without mirrors, materials or special lenses. In theory this could allow future optical (fibre optic) based broadband connections, among other things, to carry significantly more data.

Alternative internet provider Airband, which has built a mixed Full Fibre (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless (FWA) broadband network across rural parts of England and North Wales, has followed up the recent departure of their CEO (here) and confirmation of further redundancies (here) by announcing that Paula Strickland has been appointed to the role of Chief Financial Officer.

A couple of months ago we reported that Romanian telecoms company DIGI Communications had entered the UK market by acquiring 51% of the share capital of alternative network provider WhyFibre via subsidiary Fiber One Limited (here). The provider has since launched a retail ISP called DIGI and promises speeds of 10Gbps for just £25. But the rollout plan remains unclear.

A new report suggests that alternative network operator and ISP CommunityFibre could return to large scale expansion of their 5Gbps speed full fibre broadband (FTTP) network, potentially reaching close to 2 million UK premises. The provider has so far invested c.£1bn to build across 1.342m homes (inc. 185k businesses within 200 metres of their network) – mostly in London.

The Group MD and CFO of alternative network ISP Fibrus, Colin Hutchinson, has today spoken to ISPreview about the challenges of building full fibre networks in rural areas, their approach to market consolidation and on how they fear the outcome of Ofcom’s recent market review “entrenches Openreach’s dominance” and “all but kills the prospect of future private investment in many rural areas“.

Network access provider Openreach has announced the launch of an interesting new “Near-net” trial, which sounds like a different approach to their old FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD / FoD) broadband product. The trial aims to confirm the feasibility of building full fibre broadband to business footprint which is currently outside of build plans on a reactive basis.

A year has now passed since Rochdale-based UK broadband ISP Zen Internet launched its ‘Fibre Hub’ – a platform that essentially aggregates access to a number of full fibre networks, while offering that up to their partners (e.g. other ISPs) at the wholesale level. Zen now says they’ve seen a 52% increase in monthly gross demand through The Fibre Hub over the past 12 months.

Network operators Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their latest Q1 2026 results and revealed that their gigabit broadband network increased its UK coverage by just 6,400 premises in the quarter (down from 115.1k in Q4), while related consumer customers fell to a total of 5,446,100 (down by -5.6k in Q1 2026). VMO2’s total mobile base also fell to 46.44m.

The Government has published a Project Gigabit contract modification notice for Quickline’s deployment of gigabit broadband across ‘West and Parts of North Yorkshire’ (Lot 8) in England. The change expands the number of contracted premises due to be covered by full fibre (FTTP) to 28,952 (up by 2,642) and increases the public subsidy to £65.47m (up by £3.195m).

Alternative broadband operator AllPoints Fibre Networks (APFN), which is backed by Fern Trading, has today announced that Mark Walker has been appointed to be the company’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). At the same time their existing Managing Director, Ronan Kelly, will be leaving at the end of May to pursue a new opportunity.

Eastbourne-based broadband ISP Lightning Fibre, which is deploying a multi-gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) network across parts of Sussex + Kent in England (140,000 premises) and also holds a partnership to harness CityFibre’s wider UK network (here), has today announced that they’ve appointed a new CEO in the shape of Bertrand Mazieres.

The Swansea Crown Court (SCC) has sentenced a 37-year-old man to 16-months in custody (suspended for 2 years) after he was found guilty of conducting “targeted attacks” against Ogi’s full fibre (FTTP) broadband network in Pembrokeshire during the start of 2024, which left nearby homes and businesses disconnected for several days.

Internet provider BT has today published the biannual (April 2026) progress update on their delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat limited 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The provider has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 9,089 premises (up from 8,553 in Oct 2025) – using FTTP, with 461 further builds in-progress (up sharply from 186).
