The UK Government has announced that public subsidy via both the past c.£2.54bn Superfast Broadband (SFBB) and current £5bn Project Gigabit roll-out schemes has, since August 2012, helped to expand gigabit-speed network coverage to 1,006,800 additional homes and businesses. A number of new satellite “Alpha Trials” have also launched.

Broadband provider Connexin, which is busy deploying a new 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) network across parts of Hull, East Lincolnshire and Yorkshire in England, has introduced a new-ish argument into the debate over wood poles by highlighting how using them is “less carbon intensive than digging ducts.” But we suspect it won’t sway the refuseniks.

Some of UK ISP Virgin Media’s (VMO2) existing broadband customers in nexfibre areas have complained that, due to confusion within the provider’s support team, they’ve struggled to add the new +£6 per month symmetric speed boost to their package, which was recently launched alongside the new 2Gbps plan (here).

Hampshire-based UK ISP toob, which is deploying its own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of South England, has today suffered a second major broadband outage in the space of a week after customers reported losing connectivity at around 11am today. The first outage similarly occurred on a Tuesday (here) last week.

Network operator and UK ISP CommunityFibre, which has deployed a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across a big chunk of London and some surrounding areas, has today announced a new 5-year deal with the London Grid for Learning (LGfL) to supply schools with a “back-up” full fibre broadband service.

CityFibre has announced that their £69m state aid supported Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract for Cambridgeshire and adjacent areas (Lot 5), which was awarded in March 2023 (here), has finally entered the build phase. A total of “around” 45,000 hard-to-reach homes and businesses in the county are expected to benefit.

The Fusion Fibre Group, which until this month’s rebrand was previously known as rural UK ISP and network operator FACTCO, has today announced that they’ve become the latest internet provider to join MS3’s new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the North of England.

Nexfibre, which shares the same parentage as Virgin Media (VMO2), has this afternoon confirmed that they will invest £1bn next year to expand their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband ISP network to an additional 1 million UK premises (on top of their existing coverage).

Angry residents living on Griffiths Drive in Southport (England) have used their cars to block access to the street in an effort to prevent Openreach from deploying poles. The new infrastructure is necessary in order for the operator to deploy their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband ISP network.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) has today published their Q4 2023 results, which suggests that their full fibre (FTTP) coverage via nexfibre has grown to add another c.299,000 premises (up from 251k in Q3) and Virgin’s fixed broadband base slowed its growth to 5,717,600 (up by 9.5k in Q4 vs 40.8k in Q3).

Some 235 premises in the village of Charlton can finally access gigabit broadband speeds after the Worcestershire County Council (WCC) in England committed £62k towards Openreach’s (BT) project to build a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the area, which helped to “top up” with funding provided via the UK’s previous gigabit voucher scheme (RGC).

The CEO of nexfibre, Rajiv Datta, has revealed in a new interview with the CEO of ISP Zen Internet, Richard Tang, that they intend to roll-out their full fibre (FTTP) broadband network to “more homes in 2024 than any [other] altnet” and will shortly pass 1 million homes. But Virgin Media (VMO2) remains their only ISP, for now.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents some of the UK’s alternative broadband networks, has helped to setup a new Infrastructure Sharing Group (ISG) to ensure that the rollout of full fibre (FTTP) is “not held back by inconsistencies in the availability of Openreach physical infrastructure“.
