We are today publishing our 2024 summary of the top full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network operators with the greatest share of the UK new build homes market, which is naturally a table that ends up being topped by the market’s largest network access provider – Openreach (BT). But they’re not the only player.

Consumer magazine Which? has today published the results of their latest 2024 ranking of home broadband providers, which found that smaller ISPs like CommunityFibre, Zen Internet and Hyperoptic topped the table and eclipsed the biggest providers that now mostly inhabit the bottom half of the table.

Network builder and ISP 4th Utility, which is deploying a gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to UK homes and large residential buildings, has today published the results from a new survey of 2,000 people that found a “major” lack of understanding amongst consumers of crucial broadband terms.

Three UK Sees Average Mobile Data Usage Per User Hit 30GB

Mobile operator Three UK has this morning published their annual financial results, which reveals that over 4,700 sites (up from 4,250 last year) across 650 towns and cities are now live with 5G and the average data (mobile broadband) usage per customer has reached 30 GigaBytes per month (up by 19.52% from 25.1GB).

CTG and Lightning Fibre Find UK Full Fibre Awareness is Still Low

A new survey of residents in housing schemes across Hastings (East Sussex), which was jointly conducted by altnet ISP Lightning Fibre, the Orbit Housing Association and the Complete Technology Group, has revealed a “stark lack of awareness” of what full fibre broadband is (51% had little to no understanding and 87% of residents wanted to learn more about it).

FTTH Council – Full Fibre Broadband to Cover 29.6 Million UK Homes by 2029

The FTTH Council Europe has today published their 2024 ranking of 39 European countries (EU39) with the strongest take-up and growth of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband ISP networks, which sees the UK rise several places in the ranking and a prediction that we’ll hit 29.6 million homes passed by 2029 (up from 17.1m today).

DCF Report Examines Future UK Broadband Needs and Take-up

The Digital Connectivity Forum, which is an industry think-tank for the UK Government, has published a new “advanced connectivity” report that analyses “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and 5G mobile deployments, take-up and use cases to understand the key barriers and drivers of adoption, as well as what we might need in the future.

GWS Study Claims UK Mobile Users Satisfied with 1-5Mbps Speeds

A new study from Global Wireless Solutions (GWS) claims to have found that the UK’s major mobile operators are currently delivering mobile broadband (4G and 5G) speeds that “satisfy the majority of mobile users” and, apparently, the “sweet spot” for most Apps is said to be between just 1-5Mbps. But this does require some context.

A new survey of 504 UK-based businesses leaders by Censuswide, which was commissioned by business broadband ISP Beaming, has claimed that businesses lost over 50 million hours and £3.7 billion due to internet failures in 2023. But the amount of time businesses lose to connectivity failures has fallen by a fifth in the last five years.

New research from Point Topic has revealed how the adoption rates of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks vary between 30 countries within Europe (i.e. how many subscribers take the service vs premises passed). Overall, the average take-up stands at 54.4% (up from 53.3% in mid-2021), while the UK scores just 34.7%.

A new study by Broadband Genie, which harnesses data from actual consumer migrations, has claimed that there was a decrease of 38% in broadband ISP switches during the period of 15th December 2023 to 12th February 2024 and as a result UK bill payers are estimated to be £53m worse off in lost savings.

Telecom Acquisitions Group Tops 100,000 UK ISP Customers

Horsham-based Telecom Acquisitions (TAL Group), which is a holding company for several familiar UK consumer ISP brands (e.g. Home Telecom, Fleur and Eclipse Broadband), has revealed that over the past 15 months they’ve grown to total 100,000 customers and added 22,000 residential broadband users in the last quarter alone.

The UK Government has announced that public subsidy via both the past c.£2.54bn Superfast Broadband (SFBB) and current £5bn Project Gigabit roll-out schemes has, since August 2012, helped to expand gigabit-speed network coverage to 1,006,800 additional homes and businesses. A number of new satellite “Alpha Trials” have also launched.
