Somehow, we overlooked that the telecoms regulator had published the fourth edition of their forecast for Planned Network Deployments, which has revised down its expectations of future coverage after UK broadband operators did the same. The report now predicts that full fibre (FTTP) lines will reach 86-95% of homes by January 2028 – rising to 91-97% for gigabit-capable networks (i.e. FTTP and Cable).

The BT Group has today published their H1 FY26 biannual results to Sept 2025, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) network added 2.2 million premises to their UK coverage to total 20.3m (level with H2 FY25 growth); including 5.5m in rural areas. But broadband line losses to rivals jumped to 242k in the last quarter (up from 169k).

A new landmark Telecommunications Charter has today been agreed between several of the UK’s leading broadband, mobile and phone providers, which commits BT (EE), Virgin Media (O2), VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, TalkTalk, Sky (Sky Broadband) and the Comms Council UK to a “crack down on scam calls and fraud“. A sub-charter also exists for B2B phone services.

Ofcom has today published their latest quarterly Q2 2025 study of UK consumer telecoms and TV complaints, which names EE as attracting the most gripes from customers for fixed broadband and Pay TV services, while Three UK took the most flak for Mobile services.

The latest Q3 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 have revealed that their FTTP broadband network increased its coverage by 139,300 premises in the quarter (up from 114.9k in Q2). Similarly, related customers grew to total 5,704,300 (up by 60.8k in Q3 vs -51.4k in Q2) and O2’s mobile base jumped by 419,400 in the quarter, while also doing a multi-year deal with Starlink for satellite mobile (Direct to Cell).

A new study from SignalTracker, which runs a popular Android mobile app (not iOS) for monitoring and testing mobile network performance, has compared the 5G mobile (mobile broadband) performance (speeds, coverage etc.) in India against the UK, Greece, Spain and Finland.

A new survey of 3,242 UK internet users, which was conducted on behalf of Broadband Genie and supported by McAfee’s cybersecurity researchers (inc. threat intelligence data), has claimed that millions of people could be leaving their home networks open to hackers because 47% fail to change ANY of their router’s default settings.

A recent survey of 5,014 UK adult consumers, which was conducted by Which?, has claimed that the average broadband-only ISP customer could save £100 per year by switching to a new provider – rising to £160 and £155 on Sky Broadband and Virgin Media respectively. Similarly, those who haggled saved £65 (rising to £92 and £85 respectively on Virgin Media and BT).

Two of the largest backers of the UK’s alternative broadband networks, NatWest and Lloyds, have now scaled back new lending to the heavily indebted sector. The move follows an earlier report in August 2025 (here), which revealed that a number of banks had set aside funding to cover loans issued to altnets (now deemed unlikely to be repaid in full).

Broadband, phone and TV provider Virgin Media (O2) and their security partner, Akamai, have this morning warned that they’ve seen a 285% rise in phishing attempts this year. This figure has jumped to a huge 232,365 average new phishing threat entries to their threat intelligence feeds each day between April to June 2025.

Network operator and broadband ISP 4th Utility, which have been quietly deploying their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service to UK homes (SDU) and large residential buildings (MDU), this week published their annual accounts for the year ended 31st March 2025 and reported a “doubling of monthly subscriptions sold through the year“.

A recent study from New Street Research has predicted that the UK will lose around 250,000 subscribers to fixed broadband services this year, which would mark “the first time there has ever been a decline” in the market. Competition from Starlink (satellite), fixed wireless and mobile broadband rivals are said to be the main cause.

The Deputy CEO of national network access provider Openreach (BT), Katie Milligan, has warned that until “the market really stabilises” then they won’t be able to predict when their current broadband line losses to rivals will stop (Openreach lost 707k in 2024 and expects to lose about 900,000 this financial year).

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal, which gathers crowdsourced data from consumer speedtests via its App, has today published a new report that attempts to identify how far behind fixed wireless broadband (FWA) networks are in terms of performance and quality vs modern fixed line networks between 11 different countries. The gap is biggest in countries like the UK.

The Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) in North East England, which covers Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees, has today published a map of mobile signal quality and mobile broadband performance – the result of their prior work with Inakalum to harness local bin lorries to help test 4G and 5G coverage.

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects broadband performance data from consumers via their popular Speedtest.net service, has examined the onboard WiFi performance of train services across Europe (inc. some Asian rail networks) and found that the United Kingdom delivers some of the slowest internet speeds on trains.

Rural-focused broadband ISP and alternative network builder Wessex Internet, which is deploying a mix of full fibre (FTTP) and fixed wireless networks across Southern England, has today published their annual accounts to the end of 2024 and highlighted both their “best-in-class” take-up of over 30% and a 20.5% rise in revenues to £5.76m (2023: £4.78m).
