A new Which? survey conducted by Yonder has claimed that 7.2% of households missed a bill or housing payment during June 2023 and, among those who missed one or more bills, 32% struggled to pay for broadband and / or TV, rising to 42% for energy bills, 40% for council tax and 38% for water.

A new YouGov survey of 1,150 adults aged 65+ in England, which was commissioned by older people’s charity Independent Age, has claimed that 48% of respondents on a low income (under £15k a year) have struggled to keep up with their broadband ISP bill in the last 6 months (20% of those found it a constant struggle and 28% struggled from time to time).

A new study by Uswitch, which adopted a Flesch–Kincaid readability test to examine the Terms & Conditions (T&Cs) of all the major UK broadband ISPs, has concluded that Sky Broadband’s terms are the “trickiest” for customers to understand. On the other hand, Plusnet’s terms were found to be the “most straightforward“.

A new “independent report” from policy institute Curia, which was commissioned by rural UK ISP Wildanet, has claimed that the rollout of gigabit-capable broadband across Devon (England) could generate £1.125 billion of new business gross value added (GVA) for the county by 2030.

Telecoms analysts at global market intelligence firm ThinkCX have today released the results from their latest market share report on the UK’s broadband ISP market, which claims to show that providers “with the biggest price hikes lost the most ground to rivals“. But the shifts are fairly small, and it may not be telling the whole story.

Alternative network provider and UK ISP LightSpeed Broadband, which recently announced job cuts and a slowdown of their plan to reach over 1 million premises across the East of England with a gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) network by 2026 (here), has been acquired by Kompass Kapital for an unspecific sum.

One of the biggest challenges for cheaper, and often faster, alternative broadband networks is the issue of consumer awareness. A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults (conducted during May 2023), which was commissioned by Uswitch, has found that only 15% of respondents have heard of altnets before.

The latest research from Ookla, which operates the popular broadband connection testing service Speedtest.net, has revealed that Smartphone users using 5G based mobile broadband networks suffer between 6% to 11% higher battery drain than for those using 4G.

A new survey of 3,975 UK people who had a contract for a home broadband ISP in December 2022 and January 2023, which was conducted by Which?, has found that 53% have experienced “connection issues” in the past year (e.g. very slow speeds, connection drop-outs etc.) and Sky Broadband were the worst offender.

The latest biannual summary of UK fixed broadband coverage for H1 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have surged to reach 52.77% of premises (up from 45.13% in H2 2022) and 76.22% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 72.66%). Benchmarking firm Opensignal, which specialises in testing the performance of mobile networks, has published new research that reveals how the UK compares with the rest of the world for 5G based mobile broadband speeds (downloads and uploads) and availability. Suffice to say, we sit at the wrong end of the table.

Mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has produced an interesting insight into how download speeds on 4G and 5G networks – across operators including EE (BT), Vodafone, O2 (VMO2) and Three UK – compare, both generally and at different times of the day.

The UK internet connection testing firm SamKnows, which supplies services that are used by both major broadband ISPs and Ofcom to help measure network performance, has announced that they’re to be acquired by global networking giant Cisco and will be joining their ThousandEyes team to integrate their technology.

Oxfordshire-based full fibre network builder and UK ISP Zzoomm has today published a summary of their annual financial results, which among other things reveals that their FTTP broadband network now covers (RFS) over 140,000 properties (2022: 38,000) and they’re home to over 12,000 (2022 3,700) customers.

The National Farmers Union recently published the results of their latest annual survey of 814 members across England and Wales, which among other things found that 36% can now access “supefast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds (up from 20% two years ago), while 80% had access to 4G on their mobiles and 10% could get 5G.

A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch, has claimed that British people have had to fork out approximately £539m in “unexpected roaming” costs over the past 12 months since most mobile operators reintroduced EU roaming charges.
