Broadband provider TalkTalk ( AOL UK, Opal ) UK looks set to go head to head with Virgin Media later this year when it launches a mobile phone service to complement existing broadband and phone bundles. The ISP has also made no secret of the fact that it plans to launch a broadband TV ( IPTV ) service, based off the forthcoming Project Canvas, which would turn it into a quad-play provider.

The imaginatively titled Newcastle-based Broadband Computer Company (BCC) has launched a new linux-based Laptop called Alex, which runs software that has been specifically designed for novice first-time users. It's a highly simplified setup and can even be purchased with a bundled broadband connection.

Arqiva has officially launched a free public beta of its new broadband TV and video-on-demand website - SeeSaw UK. The setup is very similar to the BBC's web-based iPlayer TV catch-up service and initially includes around 3,000 hours of content from the BBC, Channel 4 and Five (Adobe Flash Player 10 is required for viewing content).

Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) and Huawei have offered up an interesting video demonstration today, which shows what their forthcoming next generation Long Term Evolution ( LTE ) Mobile Broadband technology can do. It highlights the streaming of live High Definition 1080p (HD) video at speeds of nearly 8Mbps (7540.6Kbps) and multiplayer gaming on a Sony PlayStation 3 console.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has given its support to an alternative means of funding and deploying next generation 100Mbps fibre optic broadband services. The new plan was first put forward on Sunday morning by Tory Shadow Chancellor, George Osborne, whom suggested using part of the BBC TV Licence fee to pay for its rollout; this would apparently be supported by a further break-up of BT (original news).

British Telecom ( BT ) has introduced a couple of new Winter Deals on its broadband and voice call bundles. Firstly customers can get unlimited UK weekend calls and up to 20Mbps broadband (10GB usage allowance) for only £7.99 per month for the first 3 months (returning to £15.99 a month plus £11.54 monthly line rental (18 month contract) thereafter).

The Carphone Warehouse ( TalkTalk, AOL UK , Opal ) has warned that it does not plan any new investment into broadband IPTV services, which were inherited alongside its £236m acquisition of Tiscali UK last year. Existing customers of Tiscali TV (HomeChoice) will no doubt be concerned about the future, although the service is known to have been in decline for awhile.
