The Diocese of Chelmsford has selected local wireless ISP County Broadband to help fill in some of the Internet slowspots and notspots around Essex (England) by allowing them to build a new 32Mbps (Megabits per second) capable network via local churches.

A joint team of German researchers based out of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have achieved a world record after they successfully completed a 100Gbps (Gigabits per second) data transmission over a wireless radio network at 237.5GHz. The next target is 1Tbps!

Swedish fibre optic equipment supplier Rala claims to have been hired to design a “fibre focused network” in the Northern United Kingdom that will connect almost 1,000 properties to an ultrafast broadband service. But they won’t say where it is and perhaps with good reason.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) office has moved to compliment last week’s much debated Industry Day event (here, here and here), which discussed options for extending superfast broadband coverage to the “hardest to reach areas of the UK“, by making a new public survey available for ISPs.

Customers of BT’s broadband TV (IPTV) service will shortly gain access to the popular Sky Movies channels from BSkyB. The telecoms and broadcasting giants have agreed to a new multi-year contract that will begin from 26th October 2013.

The government of the United Kingdom has so far committed around £1.2bn in public funding to help make fixed line superfast broadband speeds of 25Mbps+ available to 95% of the country by 2017. But the latest ISPreview.co.uk survey of 2,197 people has found that 67.2% of respondents would like even more state aid to be spent.

Microsoft and a variety of Estate Agents have this week criticised the poor performance of broadband in rural parts of the United Kingdom. At the same time the software giant also warned that spending £42.6bn on the High Speed Two (HS2) railway link instead of super-fast Internet connectivity is a “strategic mistake“.

The CEO of budget Internet provider TalkTalk, Dido Harding, has once again reiterated her belief that BT is “acting anti-competitively” in the market for superfast broadband (FTTC) products and she wants them to cut the related wholesale price that it charges ISPs to around £4 +vat a month.

The mobile division of TalkTalk has today introduced a new super cheap SIM-only plan that costs just £3.50 a month for 100 minutes, 250 texts and a 200MB (MegaByte) data allowance for Mobile Broadband usage (doubled from 100MB when ordered online).

Microsoft has revealed new details about the changes to its Xbox One network architecture, including improvements to its Peer to Peer (P2P) based multiplayer component and claims that the adoption of IPv6 Internet addresses should make the system faster and more secure (IPsec). But you’ll need a compatible broadband ISP in order to benefit.

BT has today moved one step closer to expanding their mobile solutions after it signed an “exclusive” multi-year agreement with EE (Everything Everywhere), which will provide the predominantly fixed line telecoms firm with Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) services.

The Hampshire County Council (HCC) have this week published a full map of their entire £13.8 million project with BT to roll-out superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services to “at least” 90% of local premises by the end of 2015. Sadly new ambiguity has also been added for rural areas.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has finally given up on its copper-based Virgin National Broadband (Virgin.net / ADSL2+) platform, which has seen its subscriber base decline for the best part of two years and recently lost another -12,300 during Q2-2013 to reach a total customer base of 168,600.

The Government has found a new way to squeeze extra money out of Mobile Network Operators (MNO) after it directed Ofcom to impose a huge annual licence fee hike upon the 900MHz and 1800MHz radio spectrum bands, which are used for voice, 3G and 4G based mobile services across the United Kingdom.

A partnership of five councils led by Liverpool City Council will today sign a new state aid supported £15.9m deal with BT to roll-out its “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to up to 98% of homes and businesses in the metropolitan county of Merseyside (North West England) by the end of July 2016.
