Politicians, love them or hate them, they’ll often turn even a sane person barmy and that certainly seems to be the direction that some people may take when they listen back to a few of the comments that were spoken at today’s 2014 Parliamentary Internet, Communications and Technology Forum (PICTFOR) in Portcullis House.

The Government has today announced that it expects 1,000 public buildings (e.g. libraries, museums, civic centres and transport hubs etc.) across some of the United Kingdom’s largest cities to be offering a free WiFi hotspot (wireless Internet) service by March 2015.

The £18.8m Superfast Leicestershire project in central England has announced the next batch of 38 Phase Two communities that can expect to benefit from the state aid supported roll-out of BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, which is anticipated to reach 96% of local homes and businesses by March 2016.

National UK telecoms giant BT has today posted their latest results for Q3-2014 (calendar), which reported slowing retail broadband growth to total 7,473,000 customers (up by +88k versus the +104k added in Q2 and +170k in Q1). The operator also revealed that their superfast capable “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network could now reach 21 million homes and businesses (premises passed).

As predicted by ISPreview.co.uk earlier this month (here), mobile operator EE has today officially launched their new next generation 4G+ network upgrade (LTE-Advanced), which can theoretically support Internet download speeds of up to 300Mbps and claims it will deliver average speeds of up to 90Mbps (Megabits per second).
