UK ISP TalkTalk Coughs to Censorship of Political Blogger Guido Fawkes

Internet provider TalkTalk has confirmed that their HomeSafe Parental Control service (i.e. network-level filtering) does indeed block customers from being able to view the website of well-known right-wing political blogger and journalist Guido Fawkes (Paul Staines) – http://order-order.com, which is despite the ISP initially issuing a strong denial. Sadly they don’t plan to lift the ban.

Small ISPs Launch Legal Action to Stop GCHQ UK Internet Snooping

A group of smaller ISPs from around the world, including GreenNet from the United Kingdom, have lodged a legal complaint against the UK’s intelligence agency – Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) – after they were last year caught tapping into at least some of the world’s 10Gbps transatlantic fibre optic cable links and snooping on the related phone and Internet traffic.

Customers of Virgin Media’s cable broadband network have become the latest to be hit by an unusual bout of website access problems after the ISPs Domain Name Servers (DNS), which translate Internet (IP) addresses into human readable form and vice versa, seemed to become faulty. Sadly it’s not the first time this has happened.

Rural-focused fibre optic (FTTP) broadband ISP Gigaclear has secured private investment worth £7.75 million to help fund the next phase of its growth and a roll-out of 1000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Internet access into more areas, which could reach 15,000 premises by the end of 2015 and go much further in the future.

The £25m Digital Durham programme in England, which was recently extended (here) and now aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 98% of local premises by September 2016 (note: 96% will get “superfast” speeds of 25Mbps+), has begun the second phase of its roll-out by upgrading the Frosterley telephone exchange.

The average Internet download speed for the largest 8 fixed line home broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom has inched slightly upwards to 22.06Mbps during June 2014 (up from 21.7Mbps in May 2014), while uploads increased from an average of 5.04Mbps in May to 5.237Mbps now.

Budget Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has cut the price of their ‘Superpowered Fibre’ (FTTC) upgrade in half for the first 6 months of service, which means that existing customers can add broadband speeds of up to 38Mbps for an extra £5 per month (normally +£10) on top of their current package.
