The Chancellor of the United Kingdom, George Osborne, has today given his Autumn Statement 2015 (Spending Review) and unfortunately there wasn’t much in terms of new support for broadband and mobile infrastructure, but we did get word of a new investment fund for alternative network ISPs.

It’s been a long time coming but the new Light Fidelity (LiFi) technology, which can turn LED (Light-Emitting Diode) based home and office lighting or display systems into a sophisticated wireless communications network like WiFi, has finally started to reach the commercial pilot phase.

Network infrastructure developer SSE Telecoms has started Phase 2 of their ‘Project Edge’ network expansion, which should make their up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable “enterprise-class” fibre optic network available to more businesses across the United Kingdom.

Pure fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has today confirmed that their 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is now live in the South Yorkshire (England) city of Sheffield, with two developments in the city centre being the first to benefit (Pearl Works and Mandale House).

Mobile operator EE has threatened to become one of the first Internet access providers to introduce a controversial network-level blocking system against website adverts, which has sparked a debate about the quality of advertising and raised questions over how far ISPs should intrude online.

Police in South Wales have arrested a fifth person in connection with last month’s cyber-attack on TalkTalk’s website (here) and interestingly the individual concerned was taken into custody on suspicion of blackmail.

Internet provider Plusnet has today joined the Black Friday silliness (even though it’s Wednesday) by offering 12 months of free ‘up to’ 17Mbps unlimited broadband service (£9.99 per month thereafter) and they’re throwing in £75 Cashback to sweeten the deal.
