Pure fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has today confirmed that their 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is now live in the South Yorkshire (England) city of Sheffield, with two developments in the city centre being the first to benefit (Pearl Works and Mandale House).

Mobile operator EE has threatened to become one of the first Internet access providers to introduce a controversial network-level blocking system against website adverts, which has sparked a debate about the quality of advertising and raised questions over how far ISPs should intrude online.

Telecoms operator EE has quietly increased the standard price of their Phone Line Rental service, which is usually bundled alongside their Home Broadband packages, from £16.40 to £17.50 per month.

The International Telecommunication Union and attendants of this year’s World Radiocommunication Conference have agreed to turn the 700MHz radio spectrum band (694-790MHz) into a global standard for Mobile Broadband, which supports Ofcom’s position in the United Kingdom.

The first 12 homes have now been connected to a new “superfast” capable fixed wireless broadband network, which is fuelled by a grant of £152,000 and will soon cover around 250 premises in the Humbie, Fala and neighbouring areas in East Lothian and Midlothian (Scotland).

It’s not just slow broadband that can discourage people from buying a new home. A RootMetrics survey of 2,135 UK adults, which was conducted by YouGov during October 2015, suggests that having a good mobile signal (34%) is now more important than the quality of local schools (23%).

Cable operator Virgin Media has confirmed that customers of their recently launched Vivid 200Mbps broadband package (here) are seeing their average Internet download speeds at peak times drop to 130Mbps (October 2015 Data), which is below the previous top package tier of 152Mbps.

The row over Fibre GarDen’s (Digital Dales) failure to roll-out an ultrafast FTTP broadband network to the rural Cumbria (England) villages of Garsdale and Dentdale has deepened today after the project said that ITS Technology Group was likely to be of “breach of contract” over their gap funding deal.
