Ofcom has today ordered BT to repay (with interest) TalkTalk and Sky Broadband after the telecoms regulator found that the national operator had “overcharged” both ISPs for their Special Fault Investigation (SFI) engineer service and Time Related Charges (TRC).

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK scheme has posted its latest progress update to 30th September 2016, which reveals that some 4,168,739 additional premises in the United Kingdom can now access a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) service as a result of a £1.6bn public investment.

The company behind the popular Speedtest.net service, Ookla, has published its annual ‘Speedtest® Market Report‘ for the United Kingdom and revealed that we rank just 30th in the world for average fixed line broadband speeds (Virgin Media is the fastest ISP) and 32nd for Mobile Broadband (EE is top).

The Advertising Standards Authority has today called for a change to the way that broadband speeds are advertised by Internet Service Providers (ISP) in the United Kingdom, which reflects the results of a new study that found “most consumers” wrongfully expected to get the speed advertised in their ISPs headline claim.

A competition row between Vodafone and BT has erupted once again after the former wrote to Ofcom and complained that Openreach’s trial of 330Mbps (50Mbps upload) capable G.fast broadband tech had broken the regulator’s strict rules, which require a consultation to take place first.

Two press adverts and a poster for JT‘s 4G based Mobile network on the Channel Island of Guernsey have been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority after they “misleadingly” claimed that the provider offered the “fastest network“. Rival operators Airtel (Vodafone) and Sure disagreed.

Earlier this year Hyperoptic announced that they’d be extending their 1000Mbps (1Gbps) capable Fibre-to-the-Premise / Building (FTTP/B) based ultrafast broadband network to 7 extra “hyper-cities” in the UK (here) and today the first buildings have now started to go live in Edinburgh (Scotland).

A 17-year-old boy, who is too young to be named, has today admitted to seven charges under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 in connection with last year’s cyber-attack on TalkTalk’s website and the subsequent leaking of customer details. The case is being heard by the Norwich Youth Court.

Telecoms giant Vodafone UK has today released their latest quarterly results (calendar Q3 2016), which saw their fixed line broadband customers grow once again to total 167,000 (up by +30K in Q3 vs +28K in Q2) and UK 4G outdoor coverage increase to 92% (or 96% by Ofcom’s definition).

TalkTalk has published their latest interim results for the 6 months to 30th September 2016 (H1 2017), which saw them lose fewer on-net broadband customers (-29,000) in the period to total 3,967,000 and 21% of those (779K) take their FTTC “fibre broadband” products (with 2,500 on FTTP in York).

Internet connectivity from a number of broadband ISPs was affected this morning (6am) after a major datacentre in London (Telehouse North) suffered a fault with one of their Power Distribution Units (PDU), which created smoke and triggered the firm alarm (the building was naturally evacuated).
