A CBI survey of 727 UK businesses has found that just 20% are satisfied with the Government’s effort to improve national infrastructure (energy, transport etc.) and 74% doubt it will improve by 2022, although 59% did feel confident that digital infrastructure (broadband etc.) would improve.

UK ISP Hyperoptic, which is rolling out a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTP/B) broadband network in 28 UK cities and towns, has announced that their 20Mbps and 100Mbps packages will from tomorrow see a free 50% speed boost. On top of that they’ve also given their branding a new lick of paint.

Israel-based Sckipio, which helped to build some of the kit that Openreach (BT) piloted as part of their 330Mbps G.fast broadband rollout, has today demonstrated over 3.1Gbps of download speed (900Mbps upload) on production silicon using G.fast bonding at 212MHz.

Mobile and internet provider EE has today launched a second ‘up to’ 76Mbps (FTTC / VDSL2) capable home broadband package called ‘Fibre Max‘, which includes anytime UK + international calls (usually +£10 extra) and a number of additional calling features into the bundle.

TalkTalk has unofficially revealed the prices for their new unlimited 150Mbps and 300Mbps ultrafast broadband products for those covered by Openreach’s (BT) new G.fast service, which is currently in the pilot phase (here) but should reach 1 million premises by the end of 2017 and 10 million by 2020.

Wireless infrastructure developer Arqiva has today announced its intention to reduce their debt and restructure the business by becoming a publicly listed company (i.e. floating on the London Stock Exchange to the tune of £1.5bn).

The UK telecoms regulator has today announced their decision to licence exempt “mobile phone repeaters” for indoor use and in-vehicle (low gain) use from early 2018. The move means that previously unlawful amplifiers could now be used to boost 2G, 3G and 4G mobile signals, albeit only under strict conditions.

The Chief Network Architect for SSE Enterprise Telecoms, Conrad Mallon, has claimed that Openreach’s new OSA Filter Connect (virtual dark fibre) product is an “inadequate alternative” to Ofcom’s push for the Dark Fibre Access (DFA) solution that was cancelled following BT’s legal challenge.

Rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has signed a new £200m contract with civil engineering giant Carillion telent, which will help to support the rollout of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) ultrafast broadband network to more than 80,000 premises in rural South West England.

The latest 2017 P3 communications study of Mobile Network Operator performance in the United Kingdom, which involved drivetests, walktests and a crowdsourced assessment across 20 cities, has named EE as the best network for voice and data (3G / 4G) performance (Vodafone came 2nd).

A new survey of 1,110 ISPreview.co.uk readers, which was conducted between 5th Sept and 19th October 2017, reveals that 31.6% of respondents lost their number while migrating to a new ISP and 49.4% said that the fear of losing their number had discouraged them from future switching.

The £428m Digital Scotland (DSSB) project with BT (Openreach) has said they’re on-course to extend fixed line “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) coverage to 95% of Scottish homes and businesses by the end of 2017. So far they’ve reached a total of 800,000 additional premises since the scheme began.

Several ISPs, including Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Hyperoptic and Gigaclear, are reported to be considering a possible legal challenge if the Government chooses to adopt BT’s voluntary proposal to deliver a 10Mbps minimum broadband speed across the UK by 2020.

Ofcom’s proposal to force Openreach (BT) into significantly cutting the wholesale price of their ‘up to’ 40Mbps (10Mbps upload) FTTC “fibre broadband” product for ISPs has been dealt a blow after the Government warned it would “disincentivise investment” in new “full fibre” (FTTP/H) networks.

A survey of 1,709 UK telecoms customers in June to July 2017, which was conducted by Which?, found that 53% had experienced a “problem with their broadband” in the last year. Sadly customers of Virgin Media (61%), TalkTalk (60%), Sky Broadband (56%) and BT (54%) were “most likely” to suffer.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has begun an investigation of Lycamobile in order to determine whether the operator breached industry regulations for EU mobile roaming, not least by levying a surcharge and applying overly strict data (3G, 4G) roaming limits.
