The latest H2 2017 study of 3G and 4G mobile network performance in London by RootMetrics has once again awarded the best operator crown to EE, although rivals from O2, Vodafone and Three UK are catching up and the latter did at least manage to beat EE for “Call Performance“.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has today further reduced the special offer pricing of their ‘up to’ 17Mbps “Fast Broadband” and ‘up to’ 38Mbps “Faster Fibre” (FTTC) broadband and phone bundles for new customers, which also continue to benefit from no setup fee. The discount will last until 2nd November 2017.

Openreach (BT) has announced that they are to conduct a second Proof of Concept (PoC) trial of “Spectrum Refarming” technology, which in theory could result in a boost to broadband speeds by allowing different technologies (e.g. FTTC / VDSL2 and G.fast) to share the same spectrum frequency.

The Government has today laid draft regulations in Parliament that revise the Electronic Communications Code (ECC) in order to make it easier and cheaper for network operators to roll-out new broadband and telecoms infrastructure (masts, cables etc.) on public and private land.

Scientists working out of the Optical Networks Group at University College London have developed a cheaper and simpler receiver for optical “full fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband networks, which makes it possible to dedicate a wavelength of light to each subscriber and “avoid bandwidth sharing.”

UK ISP Plusnet has launched a new promotion that cuts the price of their unlimited ‘up to’ 38Mbps (FTTC) “fibre broadband” and phone line rental bundle from £33.98 to just £22.99 a month for the first 18 months of service (new customers). The £25 one-off action fee has also been removed.

Alternative ISP Voneus, which has deployed their ‘up to’ 100Mbps capable “Wireless Fibre To The Home” (WFTTH) broadband network into a number of UK rural areas, has announced the acquisition of rival provider Cotswold Wireless for an undisclosed sum.

Fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic, which supplies up to 1Gbps FTTP/B broadband services to large buildings in many UK urban areas, has had one of its circular adverts banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) because the promotion looked too much like an official communication from BT.

Nokia says they will become the first to demonstrate a hybrid Wireless Passive Optical Network (PON) solution at the Broadband World Forum in Berlin, which can offer up to 1Gbps broadband speeds to homes by harnessing both an optical fibre network and WiGig’s 60GHz wireless standard (802.11ad).

Canadian firm Genesis Technical Systems, which last month got their “last mile” mBond kit approved for use on Openreach’s hybrid fibre FTTC (VDSL2) broadband network in the UK (here), has now secured their first orders from Hertfordshire based ISP Next Generation Access (NGA).

Europol, which helps the 28 member states of the EU (inc. UK) to fight serious international crime and terrorism, has called on broadband and mobile providers to end the use of Carrier Grade NAT (CGN) in order to “increase accountability online” and stop people “sharing the same IP address as a criminal.“

The Chief Executive of the UK telecoms regulator, Sharon White, has told a cross-party committee of MPs that a “key test” of Ofcom’s new regulatory approach to BT will be whether or not Openreach can “do a co-investment deal with another operator” following their “full fibre” broadband consultation.

Hull-based Connexin, which operates wireless broadband networks in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England), looks set grow after it secured an investment of £10m from Digital Alpha Advisors (DAA). A focus on smart cities (e.g. public Wi-Fi), 100 extra staff and a new data centre are all in the plans.
