The London Internet Exchange (LINX), which provide a neutral interconnection facility and peering platform that is home to 780 members (connecting from over 77 countries worldwide), has hit a new maximum traffic peak on their public peering LANs of 4Tbps (Terabits per second).

The British economist and former Chairman of Channel 4, Lord Burns (Terence Burns), has today officially been named as the new chairman of telecoms and media regulator Ofcom. Lord Burns will take up the position on 1st January 2018 after Dame Patricia Hodgson steps down.

Customers of EE’s business broadband packages will have to go back to the old fashioned analogue way of paper record keeping after the ISP decided to take their online portal for the service offline until July 2018, which they claim is necessary in order to make unspecified “technical improvements.”

As expected Cityfibre has today signed a new £1.7 million contract that will extend their existing fibre optic based Public Service Network (PSN) in the city of Aberdeen (Scotland) by approximately 17km, which should reach an additional 57 public sector locations.

The recently formed B4RN East Anglia (B4RNorfolk) ISP has this week gathered a group of volunteers to help mark the official start of construction on their new community built and funded 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network for rural Norfolk and Suffolk (England).

The state aid supported Better Broadband for Oxfordshire partnership with Openreach (BT) has today claimed to have successfully completed their Phase 2 contract by helping to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) connectivity to cover 95%+ of the county by the end of 2017 as planned.

Mobile operator Three UK has expanded the availability of their ‘Feel At Home‘ service (i.e. no extra charges while roaming around other countries) to a further 11 destinations including Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica among others. A total of 71 destinations are now covered.

Openreach (BT) has announced a new Proof of Concept (PoC) for their rollout of G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) services, which will see them offering to carry ISP Customer Premises Equipment (e.g. routers and modems) on their vehicles in order to help improve service delivery.

A new batch of crowd-sourced data from RFBenchmark compares European countries by their Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) performance. Overall the UK appears to trail most other countries with an average download of 11.9Mbps (4.2Mbps upload) and network latency of 108 milliseconds.

The Aylesbury Vale District Council in Buckinghamshire (England, UK) has agreed to conduct an independent inquiry into the controversial Aylesbury Vale Broadband project, which was setup by the council to roll-out an ultrafast rural “full fibre” (FTTH) network but has since run into difficulties.
