The CEO of Luminet, Sasha Williamson, has told ISPreview.co.uk as part of our new interview that the United Kingdom should focus on deploying Gigabit capable broadband networks “nationwide” and that the plan for a 10Mbps minimum download speed (USO) is “laughable in this digital age.”

The Government’s Digital Minister, Matt Hancock, has told the Broadband Stakeholder Group 2017 Conference that existing hybrid fibre FTTC services are “not fit for the future” and that they will “strain every sinew” (wrong fibre Matt) to get “full fibre” (FTTP/H) ultrafast broadband rolled out in Britain.

The BT Group has published their latest results for Q3 2017 (calendar), which saw their retail broadband base add 22K subscribers to total 9,307,000 (up from 19K in Q2 vs 29K in Q1) and this includes 5.285 million “fibre broadband” FTTC/P users (up by 179K vs 170K in Q2 and 211K in Q1).

The latest Q3 2017 (calendar) results from Virgin Media (Liberty Global) reveal that the operator has expanded their UK cable network to cover another 147,000 premises during the quarter, while broadband subscribers have risen to total 5,080,100 (up by +51.8K in Q3 vs +30.9K in Q2 and +80.7K in Q1).

A new survey of 200 UK businesses, which was commissioned by Cambridge Broadband Networks (CBNL), has found that 47% are not receiving the broadband speeds promised by their ISP, while 35% have been negatively impacted by slow speeds and 34% suffered significant periods of network downtime.

Vodafone UK has today claimed that they intend to “banish data use fears” by reinventing how customers on their Pay Monthly and Pay-As-You-Go 4G Mobile plans consume and pay for their data use. They’ve also improved their insurance plans for Apple iPhone owners.

A new survey conducted by uSwitch.com, which fielded responses from a “nationally representative” sample of 2,002 UK adults, has claimed that 29% of Mobile Phone (2G, 3G and 4G) users suffer from poor or no indoor reception at home. This rises to 50% for those living in rural areas.

After conducting an industry consultation Openreach (BT) has today claimed that ISPs offered “broad support” for their proposal to conduct a “large scale” rollout of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband across the UK, which could in theory reach 10 million premises by 2025. But no deal.. yet.

A team of scientists working in the Photonics Research Group at the University of Glasgow (Scotland) has made progress on a way to adapt twisted light across a wireless optical (laser) ultrafast broadband network, which they claim could make traditional fibre optic (FTTH/P) cables “obsolete.”
