A team working out of Brunel University London has secured £720,000 of funding from Europe’s Horizon 2020 programme in order to help them develop a 10Gbps capable home wireless network using hybrid Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) and mmWave tech inside LED (Light-Emitting Diode) room lights.

Remember those pensioners in Barrhead (East Renfrewshire, Scotland) who complained that Virgin Media’s new 5ft tall street cabinet “completely blocks out any light from coming into the house” (here)? After a nine month battle, plus lots of bad media publicity, the operator has agreed to move it.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed that the launch of their new 160Mbps (30Mbps up) and 330Mbps (50Mbps up) product tiers for Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband lines, which will mirror the new G.fast tiers, is being delayed by one month because “further deployment testing is required.”

Internet speed measuring company Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service, has published a short update that breaks the mobile and fixed line broadband speeds of the United Kingdom down by country. Interestingly Scotland comes out on top for fixed broadband performance.

The Connecting Cheshire scheme in England has confirmed that their roll-out of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services across Cheshire and Warrington will soon be extended, which is thanks to the securing of an additional public investment worth £7.25 million.

The Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Council in Northern Ireland has agreed to bid for £2.12m of public funding from the UK Government’s new £200m programme, which could help the region to build a new “Gigabit” fibre optic ring around the region and improve rural connectivity.

The CSW Broadband project, which aims to make “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) available to 98% of premises in Warwickshire, Solihull and Coventry (England) by the end of 2019, has agreed a £28m Phase 3 contract with Openreach (BT) to roll-out 1Gbps capable FTTP to nearly 15,500 premises.

New customers of Vodafone’s unlimited ‘up to 38Mbps and ‘up to’ 76Mbps capable FTTC (VDSL2) based “fibre broadband” packages can now benefit from a 20% discount on the monthly rental, which will apply for the first 18 months of service. As a result the prices now start from £20 per month.

Network provider Openreach (BT) appears to have completed the pilot of a new process option for Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) “ultrafast broadband” networks, which enables them to run optical fibre cables over their existing copper cable network / ducts at housing developments.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today introduced a new Sky Mobile 4G plan with a bigger 10GB data allowance for £20 per month. On top of that they’ve also reduced the price of their 5GB plan from £20 to £15 per month and removed the old 3GB plan entirely (existing customers can upgrade).

Kent based broadband ISP True Telecom, which is already in hot water with Ofcom over their handling of service migrations (here), has been fined £85,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office for “making illegal nuisance calls” and giving “the impression they were from BT” (Openreach).

Last year saw UK telecoms giant BT achieve their target of an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020 (i.e. four years ahead of schedule). Today they’ve set a new goal of cutting carbon emissions by 87% in tonnes of CO2e per unit of GVA (Gross Value Added) by 2030, from a 2016/17 baseline.

The most recent survey of 1,701 ISPreview.co.uk readers, which was conducted between 13th July and 4th September 2017, has found that 82.8% of respondents support the UK Government’s proposal to introduce a 10Mbps+ USO for broadband but 77.7% would prefer a minimum speed of 30Mbps+.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they intend to further boost the top speeds and reliability of their “superfast” 4G based mobile data network by converting (“refarming“) another 10MHz of radio spectrum in the 1800MHz band from older 2G services.
