German telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom and ADTRAN, which supplies the kit being used in various broadband roll-outs around the world, have conducted lab trials of the new hybrid-fibre G.fast technology using the 212MHz and coordinated Dynamic Time Allocation (cDTA) upgrades.

The North Skye Broadband (NSB) project, which had been planning to deploy a B4RN-like fibre optic broadband network to 2,000 rural premises on the Northern side of the Isle of Skye in Scotland, has given up its application for significant state aid support after facing repeated delays.

The South Gloucestershire Council in England, which is already working with Openreach (BT) to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage to 97% of the region by December 2017, has signed a new £3m contract that will benefit a further 4,300 premises (3,800 via FTTP).

A number of rural communities in Worcestershire (England) have been left to continue suffering from slow broadband speeds after Gigaclear abandoned their remaining commercial 1Gbps FTTP deployment plans due to problems with economic viability and permits.

Internet provider TalkTalk has today issued one of their short quarterly trading updates, which didn’t reveal a lot but we do learn that during Q2 2017 (calendar) the provider added another +20,000 on-net broadband and line rental customers (total 3,967,000) and churn fell to just 1.2%.

Little known ISP Ecom (Electronic Communities) has revealed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’re building a new ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to several rural villages in the Aylesbury Vale district of Buckinghamshire (i.e. Dunton, through Creslow and on to Whitchurch with more to follow).

The ITS Technology group has appointed Hub Network Services (HNS) to become the wholesale provider for Bristol City Council’s recently re-purposed BNET fibre optic Ethernet and broadband network, which was commercialised to supply Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP) services to local businesses.

A complaint by Virgin Media has prompted the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to ban a major TV and national press advert for Sky Broadband’s service after they were found to have misleading claimed that the ISP offered a “Super Reliable” broadband service.

Customers of Virgin Media’s UK cable broadband and TV network can now download a new Tablet and Smartphone app for Android and iOS (iPhone) devices, which will give them access to the latest account details, package choice, billing, local service status (faults etc.) and general help.

Openreach (BT) is allegedly conducting a “forensic investigation” of their £1.5bn three-year extension deal with construction firm Carillion (here), which has recently been hit by various financial troubles (e.g. net debt and pensions) that have sent the company’s shares into a nosedive.

The Leicestershire County Council appears to have moved forward with Phase 3 of their on-going Superfast Leicestershire project, which will commit up to £5.633m to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage to the final 3% of local premises (i.e. as many as they can reach).

The BT Wholesale Broadband Checker has recently added two additional rows to its output for the customer premise environment (‘VRI‘ and ‘NTEFaceplate‘) and so far as we can tell these only show when testing with a specific telephone number (i.e. not specific address or postcode checks).

The community (CIC) fixed wireless ISP Locheilnet, which offers broadband speeds of up to 35Mbps to areas from the West side of Loch Linnhe, both sides of Loch Eil and from Banavie to the wider Achnacarry/ Bunarkaig/Clunes area and Glenfinnan, has secured £42K to upgrade their core network.

A further 2,300 homes and businesses in North Lincolnshire (England) are set to get access to “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds via Openreach’s (BT) network due to a reinvestment of £2.9m in public funding from earlier phases of the Northern Lincs Broadband project.

Openreach (BT) has today launched their consultation on the prospects for a “large-scale” roll-out of Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) ultrafast broadband technology across the United Kingdom by around 2025, which in theory could see the operator’s “full fibre” network reach up to 10 million premises.
