California-based ASSIA, which supplies broadband management systems to ISPs, has today announce that “extreme high frequency sub-millimeter waves” could in the future be used to push broadband speeds of up to 1Tbps (Terabit per second) down a single 100 metre twisted-pair copper line.

The Internet Telephony Services Providers Association (ITSPA), which represents the United Kingdom’s Voice-over-IP (VoIP) industry, has today announced the winners of this year’s ITSPA Awards event. Curiously though the ‘Best Consumer VoIP‘ category seems to have vanished.

Mobile operator O2 has today become the latest to confirm that existing subscribers will, effective from 15th June 2017, be able to use their 2G, 3G or 4G Pay Monthly, Pay As You Go and Business tariff’s inclusive calls, texts and data bundles while travelling around Europe “at no extra cost.”

The telecoms regulator has today said that only a “small number of households [up to 36,000] may be affected by interference” when they shift UK Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) services out of the 700MHz spectrum band (TV will go to 600MHz) and replace it with Mobile Broadband (4G, 5G).

Openreach (BT) has informed participating ISPs that they’re “not planning further trials” of their 18Mbps (2Mbps upload) FTTC / VDSL2 “fibre broadband” product with new customers, although it will remain open to existing subscribers.. for now.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has released their Q1 2017 (calendar) results and reported that the broadband base grew by +80.7K in the quarter (up from +48.8K in Q4) to total 4,997,400 subscribers, while their Hybrid Fibre Coax (DOCSIS) network covered another 102,000 UK premises.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that over the past few weeks the cost estimates given out for their co-funded Community Fibre Partnerships, which work with local groups in order to deliver faster FTTC or FTTP broadband into poorly served areas, have been reduced.

Fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear has raised £111 million in new equity funding to help achieve the current target of making their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP/H) network available to 150,000 premises in UK rural areas by around 2020 (mostly in England).

Rocket company SpaceX has released an update on their plans to launch a global constellation of 4,425 small Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites (a further 7,500 could follow) from 2019, which they claim will support ultrafast broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps and low latency times of just 25ms.
