The Committees of Advertising Practice, which works alongside the Advertising Standards Agency to set UK Advertising Codes, has today launched a new consultation that seeks public feedback on a series of options for improving the sometimes “misleading” way in which ISPs advertise broadband speeds.

Last week’s entirely unsurprising decision by the Government to drop a proposed 30Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, in favour of the originally proposed 10Mbps, has not gone down well with either the opposition Labour Party or SNP. Both have branded it a “missed opportunity.”

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has today published a new report that makes 23 recommendations to help the Government roll-out future 5G Mobile services from 2020 and achieve “reliable universal coverage” of the United Kingdom by 2025. Easier said than done.

Crowed-sourced data firm OpenSignal has today published a bit of extra information from last month’s ‘State of Mobile Networks‘ report, which reveals that Middlesbrough / Teesside delivered the best 4G coverage (82.7%) and Stoke-on-Trent is top for Mobile Broadband speed (26.6Mbps).

The broadband ISP division of high street giant John Lewis has further reduced the price of their ‘up to’ 17Mbps unlimited broadband and phone bundle to £20 a month for the first 12 months of service (£26.50 thereafter), which also benefits from free UK weekend and evening landline calls.

Ofcom’s latest Q4 2016 Telecoms Market Data Tables have revealed that the United Kingdom ended last year with a total of 25,250,000 fixed residential and small business broadband lines, which is a quarterly increase of +216K (0.9%) and a year-on-year rise of 542K (2.2%).

The alternative hybrid fibre optic and wireless data network ISP Metronet UK, which serves several major urban areas around the United Kingdom, has re-branded to M24Seven after last year’s £47.5m acquisition of rival provider M247. Ex-Sky man Mike Darcey has also become their new Chairman.

Sources close to mobile operator Three UK are reported to have hinted that the provider is planning to compete with fixed line home broadband services by using their recent £250m acquisition of UK Broadband Ltd (here) to power an ultrafast fixed wireless network, covering 40% of people in UK cities.

Gigaclear, which specialises in rolling out ultrafast Gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP/H) broadband networks to rural parts of England, has today celebrated the news that their ever expanding service has managed to attract some 10,000 customers.

A few weeks ago Vodafone increased the price of their Pay Monthly Mobile plans by 3.2% to reflect the rising rate of inflation (RPI) and this week customers, who are outside of their contract term, have been hit with a separate increase of between 50p and £3.50 a month (depending on plan).

New customers looking to take TalkTalk’s entry-level ‘up to’ 17Mbps unlimited “Fast Broadband” and phone bundle may wish to know that the price has dropped to £20 per month for the first 12 month contract term (£25.50 thereafter). A TV (YouView) box can also be added for an extra £25 (one-off).

A growing number of Virgin Media’s cable broadband customers are claiming that the operator’s latest SuperHub 3 (Hub 3.0) router may be vulnerable to a low bandwidth Denial of Service (DoS) attack (i.e. a malicious person with a slow ADSL line could easily ruin your day).

The London Grid for Learning (LGfL), which is a consortium of local authorities and around 2,500 Schools in the city, has raised the data connectivity speed over their Virgin Media Business supplied “fibre optic” TRUSTnet platform to a minimum of 100Mbps and at no additional cost.

The Central Criminal Court of England and Wales has convicted two further men (Matthew Hanley and Conner Douglas Allsopp) of involvement with the hacking of TalkTalk’s website during October 2015, which exposed masses of customer details and cost the provider £42m.

The Digital Economy Bill 2017 has today effectively been approved by both houses of parliament, which means positive changes for UK broadband connectivity (10Mbps USO, compensation etc.). On the other hand the internet faces more censorship and a proposed 30Mbps USO was dropped.

Internet provider Aquiss has reduced the standard monthly price of their various unlimited “fibre broadband” (FTTC) packages by several pounds, which for example means that their entry-level ‘up to’ 38Mbps (2Mbps upload) service is now £30 per month (£43 if you include optional line rental at £13).

Residents of a small rural village called Upton Pyne in Devon (England), which is home to around 300 people, have been left in limbo after the final phase of Openreach’s (BT) “fibre broadband” upgrade in the area was stalled because a local earl objected to the cables going over his land.
