Cable operator Virgin Media appears to be quietly tweaking the ‘Max Traffic Rate‘ (speed profile) for some of their broadband packages, which for example means that those with their 300Mbps HomeWorks+ add-on may theoretically be able to achieve 345Mbps (its old profile was 330Mbps).

The Hampshire Superfast Broadband project in England, which is working with Openreach (BT) to roll-out “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) to 97.4% of local premises by 2019, has announced a deal that will add 400+ extra premises in the rural New Forest area to their coverage.

A new study has examined the average price of broadband and line rental across the biggest six ISPs, which finds that out-of-contract prices have increased by 38% for copper (ADSL) connections and 19% for “fibre broadband” between 2011 and 2016. But in-contract prices have barely changed.

The UK telecoms regulator has today posted an update on their quest to identify the best radio spectrum bands for use with future 5G based Mobile Broadband technology, which alongside the EU appears to have short-listed 700MHz, 3.4-3.8GHz and the higher frequency 24.25-27.5GHz (26GHz band).

The latest Telecoms Market Data Tables from Ofcom have confirmed that the United Kingdom is home to a total of 25,087,000 fixed home and small business broadband lines (up by +229K in Q3 vs +206K in Q2 2016), with nearly half (44.32%) being Next Generation Access (NGA) services.

Business ISP Gamma has moved to upgrade their national core network in the United Kingdom by signing a new long-haul Dark Fibre agreement with Cityfibre. The access agreement will connect 15 data centres and exchanges across the country via CityFibre’s long-distance and metro networks.

A team of Japanese scientists have developed a TeraHertz (THz) transmitter that is capable of transmitting digital data at a rate of 105Gbps (Gigabits per second) over a single channel using the 300GHz band, which they claim could power a future generation of Mobile Broadband and Satellite links.
