The Scottish city of Inverness has become the latest to launch a free “high-speed” public WiFi Hotspot service for local residents and visitors. The roll-out began this week and is being supported by public funding from the £315m Inverness City Region Deal.

The remote Inner Hebrides island of Tiree, which sits alongside nearby Coll, has been awarded £80,000 from the Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) programme to help upgrade their local wireless broadband network so that it can offer “superfast” speeds of up to 30Mbps.

As predicted last month (here) the Gloucestershire and Herefordshire county councils in England have agreed to hand a major new broadband roll-out contract to rural ISP Gigaclear, which will deploy their “ultrafast” 1Gbps FTTP network to thousands of additional homes and businesses.

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced a surprise deal to acquire UK Broadband Ltd. (PCCW), which operates fixed wireless broadband ISP Relish Wireless via a 4G based network in Swindon, Reading and central London using spectrum in the 3.5GHz to 3.6GHz bands.

Openreach (BT) has today announced the launch of their new Digital Mapping Tool, which the operator claims will “make it easier” for rival alternative network ISPs to plan and build their own fibre optic broadband infrastructure by harnessing BTOR’s existing network of cable ducts and poles.

The UK advertising watchdog is currently deciding on new guidelines for improving how broadband speeds are advertised by ISPs (here and here). While we wait for that it’s worth casting your eyes across the Atlantic towards New York, where the issue is about to take centre stage in a heated legal battle.

The joint Merseyside Connected project with Openreach (BT) has today announced that an additional 3,000 homes and businesses in the region will be put within reach of an FTTC/P based “fibre broadband” network by the end of 2018, which is thanks to a £2 million reinvestment (clawback) boost.

The quality and performance of Public WiFi Hotspots in the United Kingdom often leaves much to be desired, but if you were expecting it to be better at 5 of the busiest airports around the Greater London area then think again. In fact the speeds have actually got worse!

The UK telecoms regulator has had to retract a notification that it sent to KCOM last year, which found “reasonable grounds for believing” that the operator had “failed” to take sufficient measures to maintain uninterrupted telephone access to emergency services.

Carillion telent has announced a 3-year extension (extendable to 5 years) to its framework agreement with Openreach (BT), which could be worth up to £1.5bn. They’re BT’s main delivery partner for the management, maintenance and upgrading of their UK “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P/G.fast) network.

The annual uSwitch.com Awards 2017 were held last night and this saw Plusnet grab the most wins for fixed line broadband, while Three UK scooped up more wards for Mobile related categories than their competitors and Sky (Sky Broadband) also did quite well on the Pay TV front.

The UK Internet Services Providers’ Association (ISPA) has told the Government that if they wish to boost the roll-out of ultrafast “full fibre” FTTP/H broadband networks then the “most important factor” will be to reduce the high costs and admin burden of existing regulatory barriers (wayleaves etc.).

The latest Q4 2016 (calendar) results from Vodafone UK reveal that their fixed line broadband base has grown by +16,000 in the quarter (sharply down from +30K in Q3) to total 183,000 customers and outdoor 4G coverage now stands at 97% (Ofcom’s definition). But still no sign of their Pay TV service.
