The iNorthumberland project in England, which last June 2016 hit the 90% coverage target for “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) or 95% if you include the sub-24Mbps “fibre” footprint (here), has now begun to expand under the £4.1m Phase 2 extension deal that will reach 3,700 extra premises.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has today joined ISPs, civil rights groups and others to warn that the UK’s new Digital Economy Bill 2017 lacks “data sharing safeguards” and may damage the vital “right to privacy and the right to freedom of expression.”

A noticeable number of customers who have decided to adopt Plusnet’s new EE (BT) MVNO powered Mobile network service, which launched last November 2016 (here), have complained about being unable to access 3G / 4G data (Mobile Broadband) connectivity for several days.

One of the problems with BT’s new 330Mbps capable hybrid-fibre G.fast technology (ITU G.9700/9701) is that it can’t harness all of its spectrum (106MHz) because it needs to avoid interfering with the existing VDSL2 (FTTC) based “fibre broadband” service. But if they could co-exist.. speed boost.

Communications provider TalkTalk has revealed that it is turning to the bond markets for funding, as well as perhaps suffering an increase in the cost of borrowing, by securing £300 million. This should help them to repay some of their bank lenders (the provider owes around £847m in net debt).

The telecoms regulator has today granted a request by mobile operator EE (BT) for two new licence variations, which would for example enable them to use 4G (LTE) in the unpaired frequencies of 1899.9 – 1909.9MHz (Spectrum Access 2100MHz licence) and support the new Emergency Services Network.

ISPreview.co.uk can today confirm that the first Internet piracy warning letters (aka – “subscriber alerts” or “educational emails“) will this month begin to be sent by all of the biggest broadband ISPs. The “alerts” will be issued to those users who are suspected of engaging in online copyright infringement.

Internet provider Plusnet Business has cut the price of their entry-level ‘up to’ 18Mbps Unlimited Business Broadband package, which including line rental now costs £14.49 +vat per month for the first 12 months of service (£27.50 thereafter).

Doncaster-based ISP Origin Broadband, which tends to focus on the budget side of the market, has managed to raise an extra £3 million of investment via Calculus Capital, which is a Private Equity fund manager and specialist in the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Venture Capital Trust (VCT). Expect more sales staff to be hired.

Cable operator Virgin Media has today confirmed that their Virgin Mobile network in the United Kingdom will, as part of a new 5-year agreement, continue to harness EE’s (BT) Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform in order to deliver 3G and 4G based mobile services.
