Long suffering residents of the SE16 area (e.g. Rotherhithe), inside the central London borough of Southwark, are starting to get access to faster broadband connections. This comes after local ISP Relish Wireless (UK Broadband Ltd.) began installing the first of several new masts (aerials).

London-based Satellite ISP Avanti Communications has appointed Kyle Whitehill to be its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The move comes ahead of their planned March 2018 launch of the new HYLAS 4 spacecraft that will offer “cost-effective and high-speed broadband” across Africa and Europe.

Coventry-based ISP Syscomm has introduced a new range of fully managed symmetrical 100Mbps to 1Gbps capable “full fibre” ultrafast broadband packages for businesses in Coventry and Warwickshire, which are available from £200 +vat per month and go up to £550 for the Gigabit service.

The prospect of mobile giant Vodafone gaining access to Virgin Media’s growing HFC cable and fibre optic (FTTP) broadband network in the UK has once again been raised. Voda has confirmed that it is in “early stage discussions” with Liberty Global regarding a “potential acquisition.”

The ISP division of high street retailer John Lewis has today reintroduced a promotion that they briefly experimented with last year, which offers a “free” Google Home smart speaker to any new customers who subscribe to their ADSL or superfast FTTC based “fibre” broadband and phone services.

BT has released their latest results to the end of 2017 (Q4 calendar), which saw their retail UK broadband ISP base add 35K subscribers to total 9,342,000 (vs +22K in Q3). Meanwhile their FTTP and G.fast “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) services reached 886,000 premises (up from 770K).

The latest Q4 2017 crowd-sourced data from RFBenchmark has compared various European countries by their Mobile Broadband (3G/4G) performance, which found that the UK delivered an average download speed of 16.9Mbps (7.85Mbps upload) and latency of 101ms (milliseconds).

The North Skye Broadband project, which had been hoping to secure state aid in order to help fund a pilot rollout of FTTP ultrafast broadband to hundreds of rural premises on the Isle of Skye (North side) in Scotland, has reluctantly abandoned its plan due to the R100 procurement process.

The Country Land and Business Association, which represents 30000 landowners (farmers and rural businesses) in England and Wales, has called on Ofcom to introduce a binding coverage obligation that would force Mobile operators to deliver 95% UK geographic coverage on all networks by 2022.
