A new discussion paper from the University of Surrey, which was produced as part of the UK Government’s 5G Testbed and Trials programme, has warned that it will take more than “competition and public financing” to fill the existing rural mobile coverage gaps with 5G (mobile broadband) services. But they’ve got ideas.

The Broadband Forum has released the first Indoor Wi-Fi Performance Test Standard (TR-398), which is the result of an industry collaboration to produce a standard for testing Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) performance in the home. This may make it easier to compare WiFi on different ISP routers and devices.

Rochdale-based UK ISP Zen Internet has informed us that they’ve introduced a number of big price reductions (i.e. these are permanent changes, not temporary discounts) across their standard ADSL and superfast Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband and phone bundles. Plus there’s a lifetime price guarantee!

A complaint by UK broadband ISP Plusnet has resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning a website and TV advert for TalkTalk’s service, which saw them “misleadingly” claim to be the “only major provider to guarantee no mid-contract broadband price rises on all our plans.” Except they aren’t.

A complaint by UK cable ISP Virgin Media has resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning a couple of BT adverts after they misleadingly claimed their Smart Hub broadband router could deliver the “UK’s most powerful Wi-Fi vs. major broadband providers.” It’s not the first time that’s happened.
