Confusion reigns today after the Government confirmed that its controversial new internet Age Verification (AV) system, which was due to be implemented by commercial websites and “apps” that contain pornographic content (broadband ISPs would be forced to block sites that fail to comply), “will not be commencing.” But there’s a catch.

Portsmouth-based ISP toob, which is being supported by an investment of £75m (here) and aims to cover 100,000 UK premises with their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network by the end of 2021, has reached a deal to use ADTRAN’s Total Access 5000 (TA5000) series of Multi-Service Access Nodes (MSAN).

Rural full fibre provider Gigaclear has, as part of the state aid supported Fastershire project in Gloucestershire, become the first ISP to drill their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network so that its optical fibre cable can run under the River Severn to reach 861 homes in two villages (Longney and Framilode).

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has announced that they’ve managed to create 350 new jobs in the North West as part of a recent recruitment drive, which formed the backdrop for the relocation of their HQ from London to Salford (Manchester) in order to support the next phase of their growth and cut costs.

A new report from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has demanded action from the UK Government after they surveyed 1,136 small businesses. The results found that 30% of such firms still receive ISP download speeds of less than 10Mbps (rising to 39% in rural areas) and nearly half struggle with “unreliable mobile signals.“
