Residents and businesses in the neighbouring villages of Hurworth and Hurworth Place in Durham (England) have been left confused after the local Darlington Borough Council (DBC) and Openreach (BT) issued conflicting statements on the status of their “fibre broadband” (FTTC / FTTP) network coverage and future rollout plan.

Fixed wireless access and fibre optic ISP LonsdaleNET (Lonsdale Network Services), which have been running since 2012, has revealed that they intend to extend their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network into more areas within the remote rural Eden District of Cumbria.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone have launched a bunch of Black Friday offers this week, which among other things includes bundling in a ‘Google Nest Hub Max’ (usually c.£190) smart speaker device with their fixed line “superfast broadband” (FTTC) packages and discounting some of their mobile plans with Smartphones.

Rural full fibre ISP Gigaclear, which only very recently hiked their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband prices for new customers (here), will today introduce some big discounts on two of their top packages – 100Mbps and 300Mbps – that knocks £15 off the monthly price and makes activation free (saving £300 over the contract term).

Cityfibre has awarded construction firm Granemore Group the £39m contract to build their new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network for the East Midlands (England) town of Northampton, which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone.

Last night the Scottish National Party (Pàrtaidh Nàiseanta na h-Alba) finally published details of their 2019 Manifesto for the 12th December UK General Election, which largely reiterates their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) “superfast broadband” rollout project and promises to continue campaigning for more funding from Westminster.

Scotland-based UK business ISP Commsworld – supported by NE1 Ltd – has announced that they intend to build a new “full fibre” and broadband network around the central NE1 postcode area within the city of Newcastle (Tyne and Wear), which will be focused upon catering for the demands of both local businesses and public sector sites.

Back in 2017 the Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G (SaT5G) project, supported by 16 operators like BT, Avanti, SES and €8.3m via the EU’s Horizon 2020 5G Research & Innovation contract, began work to integrate Satellite and future 5G Mobile networks. The project has now completed “several successful demonstrations” of the network.

At a time when most broadband ISPs are discounting their prices for Black Friday it’s been spotted that one rural full fibre (FTTP) provider, Gigaclear, has done exactly the opposite. As well as introducing a new 100Mbps (symmetrical speed) tier and Mesh WiFi system, they’ve also hiked the monthly prices of their old plans by an extra £4.

The National Infrastructure Commission for Wales (NICW) has issued a call for evidence on its priorities for 2020 as it develops a future infrastructure plan for Wales, which among other things includes a proposal to spend a “greater proportion of public funds” on mobile (4G / 5G) rather than to fixed broadband ISP networks.

Ofcom are consulting on a new proposal that could remove a few key pieces of regulation from Openreach (BT), which is intended to support their analogue telephone (WLR) to digital voice (VoIP) and copper to “full fibre” (FTTP) Exchange Upgrade trials (here and here) in Mildenhall (Suffolk) and Salisbury (Wiltshire) respectively

Fibre optic provider SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET) has been picked by Jisc to help from data connectivity speeds of up to 100Gbps to education and research centres across the Midlands of England. Key universities, such as Birmingham, Warwick and Nottingham, will be among those to benefit from the new contract.

The Court of Appeal has upheld a key judgement in favour of Cornerstone (umbrella company for O2 and Vodafone’s network sharing), which means that 4G / 5G mobile and broadband operators can force access to land in order to conduct a survey. The case was a key test of the revised Electronic Communications Code (ECC).

As predicted cable and full fibre ISP Virgin Media has today announced that the third urban UK location to benefit from their new 1Gbps broadband speed upgrade is the town of Reading and surrounding areas, which follows close behind Greater Manchester and Southampton. The service formally goes live tomorrow.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) has welcomed expectations that the current UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, will today announce plans to prioritise mobile coverage, particularly in rural areas. The operator expects that the move will support the industry-led plan for a new Shared Rural Network (SRN) alongside Vodafone, EE and Three UK.

New customers of EE’s fixed line home broadband and phone (ADSL, FTTC and G.fast) packages may like to know that the ISP has dropped their monthly prices in time for Black Friday, which reduces all of their upfront setup fees to free and knocks a few extra pounds off their previous best monthly rentals.

Customers of mobile operator Three UK have this week noticed that they can no longer sign-up to use the company’s exclusive Wuntu rewards app, which instead warns those who try that the service is set to close on 15th December 2019. Admittedly many of its users claim that it had recently become a bit.. naff.
