Network access provider Openreach (BT) has revealed that their roll-out of Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology has just gone past the key milestone of 2 million premises passed, which is half way to their current goal of 4 million UK homes and businesses by March 2021.

Ofcom has today published their Connection Nations 2019 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks now cover 10% of premises (up from 6% last year) and “ultrafast” (300Mbps+) lines reach 53% (up from 49%). Sadly geographic 4G cover from all operators is unchanged at 66%.

The Scottish Government has informed ISPreview.co.uk that LOT 1 of their £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) project, which recently approved BT as the “preferred bidder” and aims to extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks to “as many premises as possible“, has become the subject of a legal challenge by Gigaclear.

Mobile operator O2 UK has today confirmed that they will work with Transport for London (TfL) to pilot a new 4G (mobile broadband and voice) network through tunnels and at station platforms on the London Underground (tube trains). The operator will join Vodafone, which reached a similar agreement with TfL a couple of months ago.

The Queen has today, for the second time since October, carried out the annual State Opening of Parliament, which repeated roughly the same list of Government policy plans as her prior visit. Once again this included planned legislation to support the UK roll-out of Gigabit broadband and internet safety related regulation.

Cityfibre has today confirmed our October report (here), which revealed that Portsmouth City Council had awarded them the £3.8m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) contract to rollout a new “gigabit-capable” Ethernet and broadband network to c.200 public sector sites – both in and around the south coast city.

New full fibre ISP Swish Fibre, which was this week acquired by Fern Trading (here) to help unlock an investment of £250m and fuel the roll-out of a 10Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 250,000 UK premises (starting outside London), has today revealed the first 11 locations to benefit.. in Buckinghamshire.

The B4RN Cheshire project, which is a region specific off-shoot of rural focused full fibre UK ISP B4RN, has confirmed that their “first customers [have started] to go live just in time for Christmas.” As usual the network build has been both partly funded and supported by local volunteers.

The first customers have now gone live on Cityfibre’s new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the UK City of Leeds, which will cost £120m to roll-out over the next few years and is being sold by local ISP partner Vodafone via their Gigafast Broadband packages.

Cable and fibre optic ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has continued their stream of piecemeal roll-out announcements today by revealing that 2,600 premises in New Edlington (Doncaster, Yorkshire) have now been reached by their new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband and TV network.

London-focused UK ISP Community Fibre has signed a new wayleave agreement with Sutton Council and the related Sutton Housing Partnership (SHP), which will enable their Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to reach local residents in thousands of council-owned and private homes.

Fixed wireless and fibre ISP Airband, which holds several multi-million pound state aid fuelled contracts to deploy “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) networks across remote UK rural areas, has announced that they’ve just connected their 1000th customer in the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks.

The company created to deploy and manage InLinkUK’s WiFi kiosks alongside BT, Intersection and advertising firm Primesight – InLink Limited – has called in the administrators. The situation casts doubt over the fate of both their existing kiosks and a plan to replace 1,000+ payphones across major UK cities.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network, which began its rollout across the United Kingdom in May 2019 (here), has today switched-on a further six cities including Hull, Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield and Sunderland.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has announced that the publicly funded Connected Communities (ConCom) wireless network, which since 2005 has been bringing slow broadband speeds of up to 4Mbps to the remote rural Outer Hebrides of Scotland, is set to close in March 2020.

The Post Office UK ISP has introduced a further discount on their 38Mbps (average speed) capable “Unlimited Fibre Broadband” (FTTC / VDSL2) and phone package, which drops its monthly price to just £20.90 for the first 12 month contract term (rising to £37 thereafter).

Alternative network ISP Ecom, which is deploying a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in rural Buckinghamshire (England), has hit a snag after the developer of a new build homes site in Whitchurch appeared to shun their offer of a free “full fibre” build. Instead future owners may suffer slow ADSL.
