ISP Virgin Media O2 UK Launch Black Friday Broadband Sales

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today launched their early “Black Friday” sales, which for the next few weeks will offer big discounts to new customers who order any one of their selected broadband-only packages (e.g. 362Mbps standalone for £27 per month) or dual, triple and quad-play bundles with TV, phone or mobile.

As usual, new customers can expect to receive an included wireless router (usually HUB 4.0 or HUB 5.0), 18-month minimum contract term, unlimited usage, internet security / parental controls and email. But there is currently a one-off setup fee of £9.99 to pay on most of their packages. Customers can optionally add their new ‘STREAM’ TV service (set-top-box) for a one-off cost of £35.

The sale offers are a bit too numerous and variable to mention them all, but some of their headline offers include the standalone M350 (362Mbps average) and M500 (516Mbps) packages, which have been discounted to £27 per month (rising to £56 after 18 months) and £33 per month (£62 thereafter) respectively.

Finally, we understand that their top standalone 1Gbps (1130Mbps) broadband package will be discounted to just £45 per month (it’s usually £60), but this discount will not be made available to take until Monday next week.

Cheapest way to get 1gbps is to get the non-VOLT standalone 500mbps broadband at £33 then if you already O2 customer at same address then you get a bump to 1gbps for free

    OR

go to uswitch.com and buy the cheapest O2 SIM (12 months) for £6 and get bumped to 1gbs and double data for the SIM. Total = £39 per month instead of just 1gbs ‘discounted’ package for £45!

Does this volt boost work on the 500mps to 1 gig plan? Can’t see any restrictions on the offer but does seem a bit too good to be true?

    2. Avatar photo Doubleagent2022 says:

Screw virgin media 02 I wouldn’t touch them with a bargepole ever again as they ripped me off whilst I was a existing customer I’m sick of haggling to them so I cancelled my contract with them 18 months ago as my contract was coming to the end. And the blackfriday deals with virgin broadband is still overpriced.

M350 for normal price instead of £56 a month should be £20

M500 should be at least £30 a month

There 1 gbps service is £60 a month normal price should be at maximum £40 a month robbing scum .

I’m now paying £34.20 a month for my data only sim from EE I’m getting 452.36 mbps on there 4G plus service in my 5G router what I brought from amazon.

    3. Avatar photo Kenneth says:

From what people told me once you join VM they keep increasing their prices so getting any offer from them is pointless. Anyone found this?

    4. Avatar photo Matt says:

Just take the SIM they provide with volt and cancel it directly with O2 within 14 days. It doesn’t affect your VM bundle and you keep the boost.

It’s how I ended up with gig1 for £60 post merger rather than £85.

    5. Avatar photo Martin says:

Kenneth – yes unless you go through retentions each year they will keep jacking up the price. It does seem that some of the pricing is custom and they have an agenda they want to push. When I last renewed the price without TV was only £1 less than with TV for instance

      Good spot, first anonymous.

Second anonymous, yes. It’s a bit of a maze. Go to https://www.virginmedia.com/virgin-media-o2 and click “I’m an O2 customer”… it doesn’t show up. Select the Volt M500 for £27 a month. Go through the postcode page, then skip (or don’t) the streaming page. Finally you can customise your bundle. You may need to expand the hidden speeds! But it’s there, for £33 a month (on top of your O2 sim).

Just keep in mind the O2 sim price will rise by, “lol”, nearly 20% in April.

  2. Avatar photo anonymous says:

Yes VOLT would apply to standalone 500mbps (a package NOT labelled as already being a VOLT package) as long as same address for the SIM. That’s the way I got mine originally.

  3. Avatar photo Doubleagent2022 says:

As I’m currently with EE mobile sim only £25 a month plus the data only sim was £38 a month got it down to £34.20 because of my 1st line and the data only sim 10 percent discount =£59.20 a month .

Yes both my sims are unlimited my data only sim I used 9 Tb in 3 months and EE still didn’t slow me down .

No hassle with get a engineer to install virgin cable and all that rubbish and no set up fees and no activation fees just use your own 5G router you brought outright from amazon ect and get a unlimited sim like me wallah there your broadband.

4G and 5G and 6G 7G ect is the future broadband alternative than old fashioned virgin media cables .

  4. Avatar photo anonymous says:

Doubleagent2022 – You post is amusing. Mobile reception and utilisation varies wildly from area to area. Whilst VM also has utilisation issues in some areas, the two are not comparable. My latency on VM will be far superior to EE. If everyone piled onto mobile broadband then it would only get worse, especially on 4G.

The price is what it is. EE isn’t exactly cheap either compared to VMO2/Three/MVNO operators and usually more expensive. The upload speeds are variable on mobile operators and low on 4G and only gets better if a 5G service.

Using 500mbps Broadband + cheapest O2 SIM from uswitch represents £39 per month for 18 months and then its down to retentions negotiation which in the current climate, VM are being more approachable about, if one is polite and is realistic and goes through the phone system using “Leave Virgin” option rather than standard customer services.

  5. Avatar photo anonymous says:

Doubleagent2022 – VM are moving to full FTTP fibre by 2028 on all their network so won’t be “old fashioned cables”. BTW, coax is MORE THAN capable of GIG services, it is not limited bandwidth like telephone cables. The issue with current HFC network (which is more latency than pure FTTP) is DocSIS itself and the way it works rather than the cables for the service!

Also, retentions have stated several times to me, that current deals they do nowadays are going to be exempt from price increases and the discount for the 18 months – this is always a question one should ask when negotiating a new deal and get them to confirm on their system notes to be sure or to email confirming it. If you don’t do this then assume you *could* get the annual price rise…

    1. Avatar photo Iain says:

Reasonable advice, but you “shouldn’t” have to ask. They have to make the pricing structure clear in the Contract Information and Summary they give you. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0028/229852/ofcom-guidance-general-condition-c1-contract-requirements.pdf

6G coming soon virgin media is old hopefully be out of business before the new decade 2030.

  6. Avatar photo B1n says:

God after reading all the comments of trying to get the best value with Virgin it makes me love my provider (Toob) even more. No haggling with retentions, no waiting until a specific date (black Friday etc), no deciding what speed will best suit me, I simply hand over my £25 and get 900/900.

I do feel bad for those for whom Virgin is the only option.

    1. Avatar photo anonymous says:

An end to a means. Netomnia here soon, installing in the area now. Symmetric at good prices and I’ll get a static IP instead of dynamic or CGNAT. Then bye bye VM.

    2. Avatar photo B1n says:

Oh absolutely, I used to live in an area where the only options were VM and FTTC, so naturally we went with VM for the higher speeds. Their ever increasing prices (almost always after a ‘free’ speed boost too) and the anxiety that you’ll have to call retentions and hope to match (and they wouldn’t always!) prices that new customers get looks so archaic now that I’m with an alt-net that offers 1 speed that beats pretty much all others. I’ve decided to pay a little extra for a static IP also, so I’m getting IPv6, static IPv4 and 900/900 for £33/month. I know most of the alt-nets have a similar offering.

I do not miss any single aspect of Virgin.

If your not a gamer not worried about pings good 5G area with smarty 15 pounds unlimited deal pickup a cheap 5g router on eBay or cex getting around 500mb off-peak and peak about 350mb

  8. Avatar photo Mml says:

Sad to see that VM still stick to the habit of charging you extra (£19 a month this time) for taking broadband without a landline.

    1. Avatar photo anonymous says:

Not on all packages they aren’t. Read the very first post for a start. Standalone broadband hasn’t been that cheap on VM for a long time!

BB+Phone deals like the M125 with landline are only £25 and give speeds of 143mbps people have reported with 20mbps on the upstream.

You can’t make a blanket inaccurate statement like that and not be challenged.
Post contract is different as you can cancel and switch or re-negotiate.

    2. Avatar photo Mml says:

Your point being? M125 with a phone line is £25 a month. How much is M125 without the phone line? Go and check.

    3. Avatar photo Anonymous says:

You’re still inaccurate. Your original post made it sound like all packages and you didn’t say which package you had issue with.

As I said post contract for those OTHER packages with landline can be cancelled or renegotiated at end of contract.

  9. Avatar photo Phil says:

Beware of next year double price rise with CPI 3.9% plus inflation as you could end up paying 10.1% rise in April and again in October so both rise will get these offer deal money back! No point of this black friday deal otherwise these price should be FIXED FOR 18 MONTHS with no rise in mid term contract! (Ofcom should have BANNED all ISPs and VM to stop rise price when they sign up contract for 18 or 24 months contract)

    1. Avatar photo Iain says:

The base Virgin Media packages are (mostly) fixed price.

They give themselves the right to increase the price at any point with a month’s notice, but in that case you can break the contract early.

In contrast, watch out regarding their Volt bundles with O2. O2 contracts, and the O2 portion of a Volt bundle, will rise by a staggering 20% or so next year, because O2 cheekily raise by RPI… and then some.

    2. Avatar photo Phil says:

The base Virgin Media packages are (mostly) fixed price. (not true as my mate signed up VM with full ultimate at £79 per month (18 months) but soon after signed up their price has increased to £92 per month and they told him he can’t cancelled everything due to ultimate terms and condition. I did warned him about price rise, he learn his lesson.

    3. Avatar photo Anonymous says:

I appreciate the frustration of increased costs post contract but virgin don’t use the formula that BT and mobile operators use of inflation plus 3.9% for example. Previous posters were correct in stating that.

Let’s hope Ofcom change the rules and not allow in contract price increases whether formula based or fixed amount.

    4. Avatar photo Sarah says:

First was RPI next CPI and now CPI+ inflation ofcom need to step in quick…

    5. Avatar photo Roger_Gooner says:

OFCOM does not regulate retail prices – and quite rightly – as there is a competitive market. OFCOM also has a regulation that once you’ve been notified of a price change, you’ll have 30 days to cancel your existing contract without paying a penalty.

  10. Avatar photo Phil says:

Let’s hope Ofcom change the rules and not allow in contract price increases whether formula based or fixed amount. (I doubt it as it been saying for many years now! Ofcom are useless)

  11. Avatar photo Jason says:

When my father-in-law passed away VM made my mother in-law take out another package the volt package and they said because we are on the highest package that she would be entitled to the 1gig free upgrade so she accepted even got the 02 sim card etc and when we asked about the free upgrade to 1gig internet they then turned around and said NO she not entitled to it.

    1. Avatar photo Tech3475 says:

You should have complained, EVERY call should be recorded.

I know from experience/people I know that even if the phone rep doesn’t say anything, there’s usually a process to escalate complaints if you mention it i.e. have the original recording reviewed.

I had to do this once with Sky after they didn’t mention some ‘recontract fees’, the original rep I complained to was an absolute anus who deserves to be on Watchdog, but I knew that Sky had a process to have recordings reviewed which he didn’t mention….one week later I had credit in the account and a more apologetic rep.

  12. Avatar photo Miller says:

While these deals appear good if you want landline you get screwed over they saying for unlimited calls another £16.

I dont like how they can change prices as they see fit as well.

Another negative thing is how VM have been allowed to get away with not opeing up network showing again how corrupt ofcom are going after Openreach yet VM who are not a small foot print is allowed to have exclusive deal on cable network.
