Broadband ISPs BT and EE have sent out a new invite to registered trialists that asks them to help trial “our latest Smart Hub [router] and Wi-Fi [mesh] extenders” for free (including the broadband service itself). But unusually, they’re also asking the trialists to invite people who they know that aren’t yet customers.

British registered satellite operator OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK Government, has closed one of its first – and most heavily promoted – test sites in Alaska after the Alaska Telecom Association (ATA) and local providers complained that the service was “too costly to adopt” and was “discontinued due to ongoing technical difficulties.”

A new survey of 5,139 UK consumers who had their contract end on either their mobile, broadband and /or TV plans has examined the impact of switching to a different ISP vs haggling for a lower price with your existing provider. On average, TV and broadband users saved £162 a year by switching, while haggling saved an average of £90.

Customers of the Sky Mobile service, which is an O2 (VMO2) powered Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) with upwards of 3 million subscribers, has begun notifying their out-of-contract users (equating to around 1.3 million customers) that they will see their first price increase in 5 years on 14th February 2023.

Internet service provider iTalk has finally branched-out beyond its old ADSL and Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based home broadband packages by launching a new range of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) powered services on Openreach’s national network. Some of their new full fibre packages have also been discounted.

Satellite operator Iridium and chipmaker Qualcomm have joined forces to add satellite-based “messaging and emergency services” access to premium Android powered Smartphones in the second half of 2023, which will enable them to compete with rival solutions like the Apple iPhone’s new Emergency SOS via Satellite (here).

Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media’s (VMO2) pay TV service, particularly those who are more fitness conscious, may like to know that the operator has just added content from Nuffield Health, Fiit and Fit at Home (i.e. reflecting a range of sessions including yoga, cardio, strength and kid’s workouts) “at no extra cost“.

The UK Gov has confirmed that two new laws came into force on 26th Dec 2022, which make it both mandatory for property developers to ensure that new build homes are constructed with support for faster broadband, and to make it easier to expand that into big residential buildings (MDU) when “rogue landlords” fail to respond.

Infracapital-backed broadband ISP Fibrus, which is currently rolling out a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks across both Northern Ireland and the North of England (Scotland will follow), has revealed that it now aims to reach a total of 1 million premises over the next 3 years (by Q1 2026).

Openreach (BT) has revealed that broadband usage across their UK network of ISPs increased by around 2.5% during 2022 to 64,364 PetaBytes (PB) of data, which is up from 62,700 PB being downloaded in 2021, 50,000 PB in 2020 and 22,000 PB in 2019.

UK ISP Zen Internet has put out a short and very simplified summary of broadband traffic across their network during 2022, which among other things reveals that sporting (streaming) and gaming (software) releases contributed to a general 21% increase in “peak” internet traffic in 2022 vs 2021.

Cityfibre has today issued an update on their project to upgrade their entire UK G-PON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to harness 10Gbps capable XGS-PON technology (here), which reveals that they’ve successfully completed a trial of 2Gbps home broadband speeds in York with ISP partner Vodafone.

The latest independent biannual summary of UK broadband coverage for H2 2022 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP network rollouts have surged to reach 45.13% of premises (up from 37.61% in H1 2022) and 72.66% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 69.24%). Sources have informed ISPreview that UK broadband ISP BT will trigger the next phase of their plan to turn EE into their “flagship brand for consumer customers” around the February to April 2023 period, which among other things may see their new Smart Hub 3 (SH3) router launch first as an EE (not BT) product.
