Broadband ISP TalkTalk has moved to try and deflect some of the negative attention they’re likely to get from the confirmation of today’s annual inflation linked price hikes. The provider has done this by shifting the blame for those rises on to the shoulders of Ofcom and their wholesale providers (mainly Openreach).

Broadband ISP Truespeed, which is deploying a full fibre (FTTP) network across rural parts of South West England, has once again bucked the industry trend of inflicting substantial price hikes on customers by extending their previous price freeze into 2023 and launching a cheaper plan for “financially vulnerable” customers.

Most of the major UK broadband ISPs can now confirm how much their annual price hikes will be after the Office of National Statistics (ONS) published their latest UK inflation figures, which saw the Consumer Price Index (CPI) hit 10.5% (up from 5.4% in Jan 2022) and the Retail Price Index (RPI) reach 13.4% (up from 7.5%).

Credible sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that customers of UK broadband ISP Plusnet (part of the BT Group) may soon lose the ability to directly add BT Sport TV to their service (this currently costs from an extra £17.15 a month), with the feature allegedly due to then be closed by June 2023.

Northern Ireland-based civil engineering firm Viberoptix, which is working alongside ISPs like Fibrus to roll-out full fibre (FTTP) broadband networks in the UK, has launched a new “Fibre Campus” to train new engineers in the specialist skills required to support such work in Cumbria, England.

London-focused broadband ISP CommunityFibre, which is busy building a multi-gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 2.2 million UK premises by the end of 2024, has today announced that they’re doubling the speed of their cheap £12.50 per month social broadband tariff to 20Mbps.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today announced a couple of big changes to their top leadership team, which is apparently intended to help them “continue delivering against [our] strategic goals” (e.g. the £15bn rollout of full fibre broadband to 25 million UK premises by December 2026).

Openreach UK has issued a progress update on their £180m investment to deploy a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ISP network across Wales, which reveals that their network now covers more than 600,000 homes and businesses in the country (roughly, that’s over 35% of premises).

The Government has today confirmed that UK ISP Sky Broadband has officially become the first “national provider” to adopt a new system from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), which allows them to verify – with a customers’ permission – that they are in receipt of key state benefits and therefore eligible for the social tariff.

New research from Point Topic has revealed that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.87% (24.59 million) in Q3 2022 to end the quarter on a total of 1.34 billion connections. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK appears to have slowed in recent quarters.
