Broadband ISP Quickline, which is building a new gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) and fixed wireless (5G FWA) network across rural and semi-rural parts of North England and beyond, has revealed that their service has now gone live for thousands of premises in villages across the Isle of Axholme area in North Lincolnshire (England).

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today announced the launch of both a new ‘Power Hub‘ router for their home broadband packages and a complementary new ‘Super Wi-Fi 6 Booster‘ device to help improve home wireless connectivity. New customers, joining from today, on any standard plan will receive the Power Hub router.

Network operator and ISP Brsk, which is deploying a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the West Midlands and North West of England (rollout plan), has revealed that they’ve now passed a key milestone by expanding to cover half a million homes (up from 450,000 on 2nd March 2024).

Major broadcasters including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 will this morning come together to launch their new stream service called Freely, which has been in development for a while now and is designed to be an evolution of the existing broadband internet based Freeview (inc. Freeview Play and Freesat) TV service.

Alternative network operator Freedom Fibre, which has already rolled out their full fibre (FTTP) gigabit broadband ISP network to cover 300,000 UK premises and aspires to cover 2 million in the future, has engaged local artists and school children in the Irlam (Salford) area to help give their street cabinets a colourful lick of paint.

Germany-based AVM, which manufactures the popular FRITZ!Box range of broadband ISP routers and smart home devices (widely used in the UK), has quietly settled their patent dispute with Huawei over WiFi 6 technology. As a result, some of the recent changes made to AVM’s device firmware will be rolled back.

Over a month has passed since ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) announced the closure of their long-running and “somewhat niche” SIP2SIM (mobile voice) service (here), which is due to take effect tomorrow night. But it now seems like the provider is preparing to launch a replacement solution with the help of ONSIM.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk last week informed their customers, specifically those who are using one of their Amazon supplied ‘eero’ routers, that they can now benefit from a free eero software upgrade that turns Echo Dot (4th and 5th Fen) smart speakers into WiFi extenders (the provider is currently bundling Dots for free with several packages).

The UK Government has this morning announced that new laws, which are designed to help protect consumers from cyber criminals, such as by requiring that network devices, like broadband ISP routers, receive greater protection (e.g. regular security updates and stronger default passwords), have finally come into force.

New residential customers of Sky Broadband and Virgin Media may like to know that both ISPs have just discounted their respective gigabit broadband packages to £41 per month for a limited period of time, although Sky are offering average uploads of 90Mbps and on Virgin it’s 104Mbps.

Network operator Openreach (BT) officially launched their fastest Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tiers – 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps (both 120Mbps upstream) – into the UK market earlier this month (here). But so far the only ISP to launch any consumer packages using these have been EE, although that will soon change.

SpaceX is seeking approval from Ofcom for a variation of its existing gateway licence, which would enable Starlink’s mega constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to improve its capacity, such as by expanding the number of gateway antennas at several UK sites and adopting additional bands.

Remaining customers of full fibre broadband ISP Upp (i.e. those who have not yet agreed to migrate to Virgin Media), which was last year acquired by UK network builder nexfibre from investment firm LetterOne (here), will shortly start to receive “final termination of service notices” ahead of the service ending on 1st June 2024.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media O2 has this morning announced that, since 2021, they’ve managed to remove 65 tonnes of single-use plastic from its operations and products. The move forms part of the company’s sustainability strategy (Better Connections Plan) and its goal of achieving zero waste operations and products by the end of 2025.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has told ISPreview that they’ve seen a 30% fall in the theft of their copper phone and broadband cables (Metal Theft) over the last year, which is being partly attributed to the deployment of a new “invisible” forensic liquid marker that can be sprayed directly onto cables and equipment.
