The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has conducted a new Censuswide survey of 2,563 UK respondents to assess public attitude towards using poles for overhead full fibre broadband delivery, which found that 75% of respondents “clearly recognise the benefits of having access to faster and more reliable broadband even if that is delivered via poles.”

Network operator Freedom Fibre, which has deployed a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 300,000 UK premises (27th Mar 2024) – mostly in the North West of England, is extending their “Freedom Fund” to North Shropshire in England from 5th April 2024 and has allocated £25,000 for distribution.

Broadband ISP and UK mobile operator EE (BT) has announced that they’ve boosted their 4G mobile coverage in the Welsh county of Ceredigion by upgrading services at over 10 mobile masts. The work forms part of more than 150 other locations across Wales where EE has expanded 4G under the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme.

Edinburgh-based UK business ISP Commsworld has today launched a new and more “cost effective” business-grade broadband service using Ethernet over Fibre to the Premises (EoFTTP) technology, which they say can provide “minimum bandwidth assurances as well as rapid repair times in the event of a fault.”

Hampshire-based network builder and gigabit broadband ISP, toob, which is deploying its own full fibre (FTTP) network and also sharing some of CityFibre’s infrastructure in parts of South England, has today announced its first price increase from £25 to £29 per month on an 18-month term for their one and only 900Mbps package.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone have teamed up with Nokia Bell Labs to conduct a “world’s first trial” of the “viability” of harnessing L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput) technology over passive optical networks (PON), which could “greatly improve” network latency times for internet activities like AR, video conferencing and multiplayer gaming, even during peak hours.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has picked broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2 Business) to be their strategic partner for providing mobility data, which is to be used to support the UK Government’s work at national and local levels, providing insights that reveal population dynamics, travel patterns, and other movement trends.

A new newspaper report has claimed that the ongoing work to withdraw BT and Openreach’s old copper-based analogue line services (PSTN phones and WLR), which was due to complete by December 2025, could be facing a delay of up to two years. But the delay may only apply to vulnerable users who remain dependent upon old telecare devices, which often haven’t been updated to function with IP-based digital alternatives.
