A new study conducted by the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON) has warned that interference from the second (v2-Mini) generation of Starlink’s (SpaceX) broadband satellites is around 32 times stronger than their first generation spacecraft, which is causing growing problems for radio astronomy.

A new wholesale agreement between BT Wholesale and AllPoints Fibre (APFN) has today been announced, which among other things means that anchor tenant ISP Cuckoo will be able to offer full fibre broadband (FTTP) packages via Openreach’s network.. again (some related services were withdrawn earlier this year and customers booted to a different ISP).

Internet provider Cuckoo, which is the retail anchor tenant broadband ISP for the newly consolidated AllPoints Fibre network (comprising FTTP networks from Jurassic Fibre, Swish Fibre and Giganet), has today announced that the old Giganet brand is being retired and remaining customers fully migrated to Cuckoo.

Alternative network ISP Fastr Broadband (formerly UK Fibre Networks) has announced that they’ve adopted ADTRAN’s hardware and services to underpin their ongoing roll-out of a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in central York (England), which is aiming to cover around 8,000 homes and businesses in the city centre.

The London Internet Exchange (LINX), which handles a key chunk of UK and global data traffic through their switches via around a thousand members (broadband ISPs, mobile operators etc.), has today reported that they set a new peak record for data traffic yesterday when the aggregate total topped 10.69Tbps (Terabits per second).

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned several Vodafone broadband adverts after BT lodged complaints, which claimed that the ISP was being “misleading” by claiming that customers could “switch from BT to Vodafone and get the same broadband for less” (emphasis on the “same broadband” part). But that wasn’t the only issue.

The Lifford Gardens and the Sands Residents Association, which represents part of Broadway in Worcestershire (England), has been informed by the Birmingham High Court that their Judicial Review hearing into the local council’s decision to allow deployment of a new FTTP broadband network using wood poles is to take place on 22nd October 2024 at 10:30am.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) has revealed that 18% of respondents to one of their consumer surveys still “break the golden rule” by switching their Hub (router) off overnight. This might save a tiny bit of electricity, but it may also “prevent overnight software updates” (e.g. router firmware or other devices) from being applied – that could have unintended consequences.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has told ISPreview that they’re “keeping a watching brief” on how Ofcom’s recent move to clampdown on confusing uses of “fibre” terminology (here) may impact their own guidance on advertising claims. But at present, the ASA and Ofcom’s position still appear to be in some conflict.

Residents of the tiny Monmouthshire (Wales) village of Llangwm, which is covered by Voneus’ full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network, have complained about the dire state of local internet connectivity and missed medical appointments because the local service is often said to be “sporadic” and “slow“.

Rural broadband ISP Wildanet has moved to improve their network testing and monitoring by adopting a solution from VIAVI, which will enable the operator to “detect and resolve any network issues quickly” on their new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) infrastructure in Cornwall and Devon (England).

Debt-troubled UK ISP TalkTalk has this afternoon issued a second update on their recently agreed refinancing package, which was announced on 12th August 2024 (here and here) and is said to be worth around £400m. As of today, 100% of the RCF and over 97% of bondholders have now signed up to the binding Lock-Up Agreement.
