5G Signal on SIM Card Outline

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today claimed, as part of their efforts to build support for a merger with Three UK, that their joint plans for a nationwide roll-out of 5G Standalone (mobile broadband) technology could save regular road users £2bn a year on fuel and boost productivity through remote working on trains by £1bn (GVA) a year.

A network operator called Step Telecoms UK has revealed that they’re planning to build a new gigabit-capable Dark Fibre network and lease it along with duct infrastructure on a wholesale basis to its data centre operator clients, which will initially focus on sites in London, Manchester and Slough (inc. some connections to coastal UK subsea cable landing stations).

Network operator Zayo Europe, which runs a large high-capacity metro and long-haul fibre optic network across Europe, has today announced that they’ve introduced a new DWDM (wavelength) fibre route connecting London to Paris. The move boosts their capacity between the UK and France, while providing a diverse alternative on their existing cable system.

Connectivity Services provider Aqua Comms has announced that they’ve boosted their network capacity by lighting a new fibre pair on their AEC-1 system, which is a subsea fibre-optic network that provides connectivity between New York (USA), Dublin (Ireland) and London (UK). The link is also being upgraded to support Ciena’s latest technology.

Alternative UK broadband network builder Freedom Fibre, which has deployed a 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 300,000 premises (27th Mar 2024) and is home to 20,000 customers (12th Aug 2024), has this morning announced the appointment of Nathan Vautier to be their new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Leicester-based UK broadband ISP Gigabit Networks has today confirmed to ISPreview that, despite putting their best efforts toward attempting to refinance the business, the provider was ultimately unsuccessful and recently appointed a licensed insolvency practitioner to help navigate the situation.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT, which is already in the process of recruiting another 500 UK apprentices and graduates for 2024 (here), has today committed £4m to support a new Apprenticeship Fund that is designed to support SMEs, charities and public sector organisations across England by providing access to funding over an initial 4-year period.

The business division of mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today confirmed that, as part of their plan to switch-off 2G and 3G services across the United Kingdom, they’ll also be withdrawing inbound roaming services on both of those older mobile networks from 1st October 2025.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Sure has successfully managed to improve the 4G and 5G signal across the north of Guernsey (English Channel Island) by hiding a new mast in plain sight, which was achieved by deploying the new infrastructure in a marina and making it look like a tall white yacht mast.

The Scottish Government has finally caught up with similar legislation in England (here and here), which was introduced at the end of 2022, by effectively mandating that property developers must ensure their new build homes are constructed with support for gigabit-capable broadband connections. This will become effective from 1st January 2025.

The Welsh Government has today issued a progress update on their Local Broadband Fund (LBF), which was launched in 2020 and has so far allocated £12m – across four funding phases – to help local authorities and social enterprises to deliver faster broadband networks to areas and sites that need it (i.e. those unable to access speeds of 30Mbps+ today).

A new London-registered alternative network provider called Countryside Fibre has cropped up with a plan to deploy a gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network (FTTP vs GPON) across parts of North Somerset in England. The provider will sell packages both directly to homes and businesses, as well as via wholesale through other ISPs.

The annual Mobile Industry Awards event for 2024 was held last night at the Royal Lancaster in London, which among other categories saw Sky Mobile being named the ‘Best MVNO‘ (virtual) operator, while EE won the ‘Retailer of the Year‘ and VOXI’s GenAI Chatbot was named ‘Innovation of the Year‘.

In a rather unusual service outage, some of Sky UK’s customers are suffering from a serious and ongoing issue that is preventing them from being able to switch-on their broadband-based Sky Glass and Sky Stream pay TV streaming devices. We can’t say we’ve ever heard of many issues quite like this one before, but hopefully the devices can be remotely recovered.

The Broadband Forum has launched a new roadmap that they hope will aid ISPs in implementing the new Low Latency, Low Loss and Scalable Throughput (L4S) technology, which has the potential to improve network latency times for popular UK internet activities like online video games, video conferencing, cloud gaming and so forth.
