BT Engineer Looking at UK Map on Tablet

The BT Group has today published their biannual full year (H2 FY25) results to March 2025, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) network added 2.2 million premises to their UK coverage in H2 (up from 2.1m in H1) to cover 18.08m (4.9m in rural areas) and will accelerate its rollout by 20%. But broadband line losses to rivals hit 243k in the last quarter (up from 208k).

Abingdon-based alternative network provider Gigaclear, which is built a full fibre broadband network that covers 580,000 premises (RFS) across rural parts of England (inc. 130,000+ customers), has introduced a new discount that reduces the monthly price of their 500Mbps (469Mbps avg.) package to just £22 per month.

Openreach (BT) has today revealed that their roll-out of a new 1.8Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in Cardiff (Wales) has reached 140,000 premises (i.e. around 80% of properties across the city). The build is still very much ongoing, although less than two in five who could upgrade to the new network have done so.

UK ISP Quickline, which is deploying a gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) and fixed wireless (FWA) broadband network across rural parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England), has agreed to revise its roll-out plan for the North Yorkshire village of Skelton after residents and local politicians complained it would have a “huge visual impact” due to the use of 9m tall poles.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media Business (VMO2) has today followed BTWholsale by launching Microsoft’s ‘Teams Phone Mobile‘ service to its large business customers (250+ employees) in the UK, which among other things makes it easy to move between mobile and desktop Teams calls seamlessly.

Mobile network operator Vodafone recently hooked up with semiconductor (CPU etc.) firm MediaTek to test the combination of their 5G Standalone (5G SA) based mobile broadband network with the latest M90 modem. The solution proved able to deliver 5G uplink speeds of up to 277Mbps at their test facility in Madrid (Spain).

Network operator CityFibre, which has so far built their 2.5Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 4.4 million UK premises (4.2m Ready for Service), have today confirmed the completion of their “primary” £30 million build in the Suffolk (England) town of Ipswich.

One of the UK’s largest alternative full fibre broadband operators, Netomnia (inc. retail ISPs Brsk and YouFibre), has deployed a Smartoptics ROADM-based core network across the UK that should deliver scalable IP over DWDM at 100G and 400G wavelengths and is even classed as being “800G-ready by design” (800Gbps if you prefer).

The Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Eastwood, Jackson Carlaw, has warned of “serious uncertainty” over the ability of some areas in the City of Glasgow, which have been held up for years by the owners of private roads, to be connected to CityFibre’s new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) UK broadband ISP network.

The Mobile Infrastructure Forum (MIF), which represents the main providers of mobile network infrastructure for EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK (i.e. Cellnex UK, Cornerstone, MBNL and WIG), has today called on the government to resolve the issue of 6,200 UK sites (masts etc.) that are “stuck in legislative limbo” and preventing 5G upgrades.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), prompted by a complaint from rival mobile operator EE (BT), has banned two website adverts for Vodafone after the watchdog found that it had made “misleading” savings claims and the packages did not return to the prices against which the savings were being claimed once the promotions ended.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today ordered mobile operator EE (BT) to ensure that the “unlimited data” (mobile broadband) claims on their website, which apply to various 4G and 5G mobile plans, are directly qualified with the limits expressed in their associated Fair Usage Policy (FUP).

Mobile network operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their Q4 FY25 financial results, which confirms that their fixed line broadband base grew by a healthy 61,000 in the last quarter to total 1.61 million customers (down from 72k added in Q3 2024). But their mobile base fell again to total 18.175m (down by -125k in Q4 vs -174k in Q3).

Business telecommunications and UK broadband ISP Spitfire has today called on Openreach (BT) to provide “much needed clarity” for service providers, and the businesses they support, on new contracts related to the looming switch-off of the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in favour of IP-based digital phone (VoIP etc.) services.

A new report from analyst firm Enders Analysis, which was recently shared with ISPreview, has revealed that broadband traffic volume growth across most developed countries has “slowed to a relative crawl” to become the “new normal” (i.e. falling from 30%+ for many years and now at 10-15%). The story is similar for mobile (4G, 5G etc.) services (falling to 5-10%).

Last year we reported on how broadband and mobile provider Vodafone had been hit with a £120m+ legal claim from over 60 current and former UK franchisees (here). The group, which said they were challenging the “financial, mental, and physical impacts of the retail giant’s “irrational” business decisions“, today reported that their attempt to mediate a solution “has come to an end with no resolution“.
