Broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have taken a break from telecoms service provision in order to highlight the ease to which cyber criminals can break into your online accounts. In order to do this they enlisted the help of an ethical hacker to conduct a security assessment on a group of volunteers. Needless to say, account passwords were broken within 3 minutes.

The UK Government (DSIT) has today moved to complement their recently introduced Digital Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) by launching a new £9.5m Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund (DIIF). The fund is designed to support local authorities, charities and research organisations in helping to get people online who might otherwise struggle.

Infracapital-backed network operator and UK ISP Fibrus has today revealed that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit-capable broadband network has now covered 100,000 homes and businesses across Cumbria in England, which has been achieved less than three years after they started to build in the region (Nov 2022).

Customers of Sky’s (Sky Broadband etc.) Pay TV services, such as Sky Glass and Sky Stream, may like to know that the UK provider has extended its partnership with the Premier League for the coming year and increased the exclusively live matches they carry from 128 to a minimum of 215. But that’s not all – new features are also coming to their streaming platforms.

SMARTY, which is a virtual mobile operator (MVNO) on Three UK’s (VodafoneThree) network, has moved to celebrate the summer holidays by significantly boosting the data (mobile broadband) allowances on some of their Pay Monthly SIM Only plans. For example, one of the cheapest £7 plans now comes with 24GB of data (up from 8GB) at no extra cost.

The North Yorkshire Council (NYC) in England has proposed to wind-up the NYNet 100 company, which was originally created to help carry out procurement and contract management for the local authority’s Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) project. This has helped 201,000 premises in the rural county to access faster broadband over the last 15 years.

London-focused ISP Vorboss, which runs a 100Gbps speed fibre optic network in the UK’s capital city, has told Ofcom that reclassifying the UK’s market for high capacity leased lines to include “LeasedLine Equivalents” (LLEs), such as XGS-PON technology (underpins many FTTP broadband networks), would be “misguided, confusing, and ultimately detrimental“.

Network operator Openreach has today revealed that their engineers, alongside those of other alternative networks, are now resuming efforts to both maintain their existing network in the village of Bramley (Surrey) and to deploy new full fibre broadband (FTTP) infrastructure. Much of this was stopped a few years ago after the seriousness of a local petrol leak became clear.

The BBC’s Controller of Digital Transition, Helen Burrows, has confirmed that the corporation is “exploring the idea” of building its own UK set-top-box device to support the new broadband-based live TV streaming service, Freely, which until recently lacked any support among existing steaming boxes and sticks.

Glasgow-based full fibre broadband ISP Brillband, which was acquired by AllPoints Fibre Networks (APFN) back in October 2024 (here), has today announced that they’ve successfully placed their first orders via APFN’s new aquila wholesale platform – this aggregates fibre (FTTP) networks from several operators to help retail providers expand their coverage.

Rochdale-based ISP Zen Internet has today announced that ITS Technology‘s business-focused UK full fibre network is now live on their Fibre Hub, which forms part of their recently agreed partnership (here) and essentially aggregates access to a number of full fibre broadband networks for partner providers. But that’s not the only development that Zen has announced.
