The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, and WiredScore have this week introduced a new “Connectivity Ratings Scheme,” which awards big buildings in the city with a rating of either Platinum, Gold, Silver or Certified (aka – Bronze) depending upon the quality of its broadband and Internet connectivity.

UK ISP BT has increased the included Sainsbury’s gift cards on their packages to £75 for standard broadband (up to 17Mbps) and £125 on their superfast up to 38-76Mbps capable BTFinity (FTTC) services, but the one-off “fibre activation fee” has jumped from £35 to £39 (free for Infinity 2 packages).

The CEO of UK ISP TalkTalk, Dido Harding, has today blasted BTOpenreach’s commitments (Customer Charter) to improve national broadband speeds, network coverage and customer service as being both “weak” and lacking in ambition.

EE reported their latest Q3 2015 results today, which revealed that their fixed line home broadband subscribers increased by just +8,000 in the quarter to total 927,000 (down sharply from +35K in Q2 and +50K in Q1). But 4G mobile performance continued to be strong.

At the end of last year the Connecting Cheshire project in England signed a new £6m Superfast Extension Programme contract to bring BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to a further 10,000 premises by summer 2017 (here). Work on this has now started, with a rough roll-out plan also being published.

Forget BT’s plan to deploy “ultrafast” 300-500Mbps capable G.fast broadband technology to 10 million UK premises by 2020 (here). Today the operator has joined with Alcatel-Lucent to test future XG.FAST (G.fast2) technology, which under lab conditions has just pushed aggregate speeds of 5.6Gbps over 35 metres of copper cable.

Israel-based Sckipio has made several announcements at the start of this week’s Broadband World Forum event, not least with their ability to squeeze a broadband speed of 2000Mbps out of the new G.fast (ITU G.9701) technology that BT are also preparing to roll-out. But there’s a catch.

The Connected Counties project has announced that it will bring forward the start of their Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract in Hertfordshire by six months, which means that BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network should reach 98% coverage by June 2018 instead of 2019.

The on-going attempts to turn BT into a pinata continue this week as both Vodafone and Sky (Sky Broadband) have taken another opportunity to prod the telecoms giant ahead of Ofcom’s Strategic Review decision, with one demanding a national Gigabit broadband network and the other attacking the operator’s excess profits.
