Business internet provider Elite claims to have recently lit more than 100,000 postcodes on their new Dark Fibre fed network, starting in London, for the United Kingdom’s “lowest cost Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet,” with an additional 60,000 to come in the next 4-6 months.

Telcom Networks has chosen the 160km long ‘The Loop‘ fibre optic network from Gamma to deliver multi-Gigabit broadband and Ethernet data speeds to potentially hundreds of businesses across Manchester. Initially only 15 prominent buildings in the city centre will be connected but many more should follow.

The UK government has launched a new nationwide Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which is funded by a pot of £67m and aims to provide vouchers worth up to £3000 for businesses (SME) or £500 to residents to help with the costs of connecting to “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband.

Openreach (BT) has issued a new notice to ISPs that sell their Gigabit capable FTTP on Demand broadband product, which reminds them of how “FoD capacity” will continue to be “constrained” by an “industry-wide operational capacity of 20 FoD orders per calendar month.”

The M&G Investment Management fund has offered to buy ultrafast fibre optic (FTTP) rural broadband ISP Gigaclear for £270 million (all cash), which is backed by the UK operator’s largest shareholder Infracapital (43.2% holding). The offer is due to be discussed next week.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today launched a new paid training programme (‘Women in Home Service‘) that will aim to offer career and development opportunities for up to 1,000 UK women interested in a becoming one of their engineers. At present, just 2% of the engineering workforce at Sky are female.
