After a period of uncertainty it’s today been revealed that Sky Broadband has done a new wholesale deal with Openreach (BT) to sell the operator’s range of “ultrafast broadband” (G.fast and FTTP) services on to UK customers, which will come at a hefty price discount of up to 40%. Sky now hope to double their customer base.

It’s been over two years since Openreach (BT) withdrew its own VDSL2 modem as an option from their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) installation service, which many ISPs initially provided to customers before self-installations and all-in-one routers became the norm. Now future firmware updates are also due to end.

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England has revealed how an additional £11.15m of funding, which was recently secured from the Government’s £75m Rural Broadband Infrastructure Scheme (RBIS), could boost “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage from the current target of 95% to 97%.

Sparse rural communities and new build housing developments are two of the areas that councillors in Derbyshire are now recognising as problems for their on-going Digital Derbyshire (DD) project, which currently aims to ensure that 98% of local premises can access “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) by the end of 2018.

Low cost UK ISP TalkTalk has today further discounted the special offer prices of their residential focused broadband and phone bundles. One of the biggest reductions is on their 63Mbps FTTC based “Faster Fibre Large” package, which has fallen from £28.50 a month to just £25 for 18 months of service.

The Suffolk County Council in England has officially confirmed that their £64m state aid supported Better Broadband for Suffolk (BBS) project with Openreach (BT) will achieve 98% coverage of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable (FTTC/P) networks by the end of 2020 as hoped (up from over 93% today).

Consumers adopting one of Openreach’s 80Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based UK broadband ISP lines (usually advertised with average speeds of c.60-65Mbps) are likely to create fewer fault reports during the initial provision phase after the new “low level error correction” feature began being applied to them.

The Scottish Government’s future £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) superfast broadband rollout programme could be facing a problem after sources told ISPreview.co.uk that Axione, one of three remaining bidders for the contract, had allegedly set its lawyers on BT (Openreach) over claims of anti-competitive behaviour.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has today launched a new “Great Connection Guarantee” for new (NOT existing) customers of their FTTC based “Faster Fibre” broadband services, which essentially enables them to leave penalty free within the first 30 days of their service going live “if they’re not fully satisfied“.

UK ISP Sky Broadband appears to have enhanced their existing package discounts for new customers by introducing a £100 reward card (Prepaid Mastercard), which is available across all three of their primary unlimited broadband (ADSL, FTTC) and phone line rental bundles.
