Connect Fibre Engineers Next to Fibre Drum

ISP Connect Fibre (Fibre Assets), which aims to cover 100,000 premises across the East of England with their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, has continued their steady rollout and now looks set to go live in the large village of Killamarsh (Derbyshire) and the town of Thorne (South Yorkshire).

The States of Guernsey has confirmed that their joint £37.5m project with incumbent broadband ISP Sure, which aims to build a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the entire English Channel Island of Guernsey (30,000 premises) by the end of 2026, is running ahead of schedule and has now covered 9,000 homes.

Abingdon-based rural broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has deployed a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 380,000 premises (mostly in England), have today celebrated after they announced the connection of their 75,000th customer to the network.

Openreach (BT) has today issued another update to their £15bn UK rollout of a new multi-Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which adds 10 new locations to their deployment plan – covering an additional 124,000 homes and businesses in places across England, Wales and Scotland.

UK ISP BT has published their latest biannual (April 2023) update on the progress they’ve made in delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which reveals that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 7,000 premises (up from 5,900 in Oct 2022), with 800 further builds in progress (down from 2,000).

Oxfordshire-based alternative network and UK broadband ISP Zzoomm has reportedly become the latest full fibre builder to hit troubled waters. The provider is understood to be laying off 300 employees in its construction team (engineers and office jobs), which is said to reflect about 50% of their workforce.

Sometimes the UK rollout of a new full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network in an area can be a bit of a roller coaster, which is something we’ve touched on a few times before (example). But today it’s the turn of Openreach, which recently seemed to suffer an almost comical level of difficult with deciding whether or not they’re even building.

Fibre builder Netomnia – supported by UK ISP YouFibre – have today added 5 new locations to their rollout of a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which will ultimately expand their coverage to a further 218,000 premises in England and at an additional cost of £66 million.

Planning is reportedly underway for the next phase of the UK Government’s £5bn rural Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which would see more public funding from the existing commitment being set aside to help reach digitally disadvantaged premises (remote and urban) that the initial scheme has so far been unable to tackle.
