BT is considering a unique technology deal with California-based Sun Microsystems that could see homes equipped with a special broadband terminal (Sun Ray). The method would be cheaper than traditional PCs and offer specialised broadband content over ADSL lines:
The service would offer BT customers virus-free access to movies, music and home office applications on slimmed-down terminals costing a quarter of the price of traditional personal computers.
BTs broadband network the internet pipes linking the home to the telcos network would pump the content directly to the user, making it instantly available even to the most computer illiterate consumer.
The new Sun Ray terminals which are about the size of an up-ended telephone directory and come with a monitor and keyboard were unveiled by Sun at its annual conference in San Francisco last week. The technology is designed to be as simplistic to use as a toaster and yet would also contain a number of features (Office/Work applications etc.) familiar to PC owners. Exact details are unclear, although The Scotsman has more information
