The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in Humber, a large tidal estuary situated on the east coast of Northern England, has just become one of the UKs most remote-rural locations to have a next generation 100Mbps Fibre Optic ( FTTH ) broadband link installed.

Two weeks ago Hull's only broadband ISP, Karoo (Kingston Communications), drew flack after it emerged that the provider was disconnecting customers suspected of piracy without a warning (here). Karoo promptly changed its policy to issue three written notifications before a user's service is temporarily suspended. Now it has emerged that the ISP has gone one step further, requiring a full court order before it imposes a service cut-off.

A Romsley (Bromsgrove) resident has hit out after his ISP, Orange UK, issued a letter informing him that what he pays for broadband would soon increase by an extra £8.81 per month because of charges from BT for use of the village's exchange. The issue appears to have surfaced because the local exchange has not been unbundled ( LLU ) to offer the providers cheaper prices.

The Sweden-based Icomera, a provider of cellular broadband gateways, has announced that UK-based Excel Passenger Logistics has selected its Mobile Broadband Gateway to provide Wi-Fi (wireless broadband) connectivity and GPS tracking on buses and coaches serving British airports.

Broadband ISP Tiscali UK has refreshed its range of broadband packages and bundles to include a number of new promotions for even lower prices. Prices start at just £6.49 per month for a standalone 'up to' 8Mbps broadband-only service and rise to £24.99 for a triple-play bundle of broadband, voice calls/line rental and TV service.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has uploaded an interesting video about how it used Michael Bosanko, an expert at Light Graffiti, to help put together its new "brighter broadband" campaign. Light Graffiti uses long exposure photos and different coloured torches to "draw" with light. The effect is a bit like taking a photo of a waving sparkler on bonfire night.

BT Openzone has created a new partnership with Wicoms that will see Wi-Fi broadband wireless Hotspot access being made available at major UK holiday and leisure parks; including 77 Camping and Caravanning Club sites, three Pontin’s sites and locations at Coastfields Leisure sites in Skegness.

Price comparison site Simplifydigital UK has published the results of new rankings that claim to reveal the best value broadband ISPs relative to the actual speed (not the advertised rate) they deliver (speed delivered, per £ spent). Sky Broadband tops the table at £1.14 per Mb of speed, although only the largest nine UK ISPs were included in the table.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk is offering new customers a bill credit of £19.47 when they subscribe to the providers popular Essentials line rental (voice) and broadband package for £17.74 inc. VAT per month (18 month minimum contract). The credit is exactly equal to three months worth of their broadband service at £6.49 but does not remove the £11.25 cost of line rental.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has extended its FREE Broadband Installation (saves about £30) offer to include standalone broadband packages. Previously the promotion had only been available to new customers that took a bundle of services. We note that the additional £20 credit is also still being applied to online purchases of three cable services together (i.e. broadband, TV and phone) on a 12-month contract.

The Office of the Telecommunications Adjudicator (OTA2) has today published its July 2009 update and revealed that the UK is now home to over 6,009,593 unbundled ( LLU ) telephone lines. Unbundled lines allow rival ( non – BT ) telephone and broadband ISPs to manage and install their own kit in BT's exchanges, which often results in considerably cheaper and or more flexible services ( e.g. TalkTalk , Sky Broadband etc. ).

The promotion is only valid for those who take the providers 12 month contract options but does apply to all packages and could save consumers up to £43. The latest Deloitte and YouGov research, which was commissioned by the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival and conducted with 2,123 viewers, has revealed that faster broadband will not be the catalyst for Internet TV viewing. Over half (53%) said they would not watch more online video clips or TV even with a faster and more reliable connection.

UK Music's latest annual academic survey investigating the music consumption behaviour of young broadband users aged 14-24 has revealed that illegal downloading ( file sharing / P2P ) is still rife. Its popularity remains unchanged since 2008 - 61% said they download music using P2P networks or torrent trackers and 83% of those are doing so on a weekly or daily basis.

The UK governments Cabinet Office has issued what appears to be a blanket refusal to process any further Freedom of Information Act requests concerning Phorm (WebWise). This is the controversial system that raised privacy concerns because of how it works with UK broadband ISPs to monitor what websites you visit for use in targeted advertising campaigns.

The UK governments Interception of Communications Commissioner, Sir Paul Kennedy, has revealed in his Annual Report [1st Jan to 31st Dec 2008] (Adobe Reader .PDF) that public authorities as a whole made a staggering 504,073 requests for communications data (your telephone, email or website access logs etc.) from Internet Service Providers ( ISP ) and Telecom operators.

BT's trial rollout of next generation 'up to' 40Mbps fibre optic ( FTTC ) broadband technology in Muswell Hill, North London, has been partly halted after residents complained that the large new 1.8m tall junction boxes (cabinets) installed by the operator were "unsightly" and causing an obstruction.
