London Internet Exchange (LINX), which represents over 330 ISPs - including many UK broadband providers, has made its response to the governments consultation on controversial Internet snooping plans public. The group warned that many important questions remained unanswered, such as precisely what data should be stored, costs of such storage, the impact upon a law abiding citizens right to privacy and many other legally grey areas.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has reported its latest second quarter 2009 results, which show that the operator suffered a significant slowdown in broadband growth. Total broadband subscribers increased from 3,977,100 in Q1-2009 to just 3,980,900 now, which contrasts with much stronger net adds of +47,300 in the previous quarter.

Ofcom has just released its fourth
Communications Market Report 2009 (August), which is a mammoth 334 page .PDF (Adobe Reader) document charting every conceivable variable of the UK's Television, Radio and Telecoms (Voice, Broadband etc.) markets. It reveals that nearly 65% of UK households had a fixed-line broadband connection in Q1 2009, up from 58% a year previously.

BT has kept its promise by offering the BT Broadband Accelerator (iPlate) device for free to any consumers and businesses that are likely to benefit (

Customers of O2’s mobile data services have once again been hit by problems when attempting to access the Internet via their mobile phones or a Mobile Broadband USB Modem. The sporadic issue, which is affecting an unknown number of customers in locations such as Nottingham, London and Liverpool, appears eerily similar to the problems that beset O2 last month (

The European Union (EU) has published a new
Digital Competitiveness Report (Adobe Reader .PDF), which finds that the EU is home to 114 million fixed broadband subscribers and that half of EU households and more than 80% of EU businesses have a fixed broadband connection. Some three quarters of those also have average download speeds of over 2Mbps (Megabits per second).

Mobile operator Orange UK will later today throw the gauntlet down to its rivals by beginning a price war with what could be one of the cheapest Mobile Broadband packages available. A commons committee of MPs has warned the UK and Welsh Assembly governments that urgent action is needed to help solve the lack of broadband coverage in Wales, especially in the country's remote and rural locations. Recent changes to how BT charges for its Special Fault Investigations (SFI) have caused frustration among UK broadband ISPs because of the higher costs and administrative hassle that could be incurred by both end-users and providers. At present, if several broadband or telephone line SFIs are carried out on one BT Wholesale fault then only the last clear code is considered for charging purposes, yet under new rules all SFIs will be subject to potential billing.
