Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) has updated its Mobile Broadband and computer bundles with the newer Asus Eee PC1005H Netbook (worth about £200) and the Samsung R519 laptop (worth about £380); both available on a 24 month contract with 300 free txt messages and unlimited Wi-Fi Hotspot access.

Mobile operator Orange UK (France Telecom) has come top for Mobile Broadband in YouGov's latest Dongle Tracker survey of 4,417 adults, of which 2,181 used Mobile Broadband by means of a USB Modem (Dongle) or datacard. The result somewhat dethrones rival T-Mobile from the top spot of YouGov's earlier surveys.

The Get Safe Online campaign has kindly reminded us that this week (16th - 20th November) is officially Get Safe Online Week 2009. To coincide with this the campaign has released its latest annual report (GOS Report 2009 - .PDF), which found that just 14% feel at risk from Internet crime in their daily lives. However 56% of those surveyed said that they or their close friends, family or colleagues have been the victim of some kind of online crime.

Ofcom has launched a new "discussion document" today to help it explore the potential of a new technology that could wirelessly link up different devices and offer enhanced broadband access in rural areas. The tech works by searching for unoccupied radio waves (called "white spaces") between TV channels to transmit and receive wireless broadband signals.

Plymouth's (UK) local The Herald newspaper reports that H2O Networks ( i3 Group ) is in talk with the local Chamber of Commerce to help build a 100Mbps next generation fibre optic ( FTTH ) broadband network in the area, provided there is demand. H2O would even cover £35million of the total £40m (£5m for a new Internet Exchange) required to build the network.

Swindon Borough Council has teamed up with Rikki Hunt (the concept creator) and digital technology firm aQovia to setup a company called Digital City UK (aka - Signal), which boldly plans to install a wireless ( Wi-Fi ) broadband mesh covering the whole borough with free internet access for all!

Broadband ISP TalkTalk ( The Carphone Warehouse ) has predicted that email could "die out ... in the next 10 years" because younger Internet users are increasingly switching to using Instant Messaging (IM) and Twitter style services to communicate. It probably doesn't help that email is still being SPAMMED (junk mail) to death, with nearly 9 in 10 messages being rubbish.

Broadband ISP Eclipse Internet (KCOM) has become the latest provider to announce its involvement with BT's next generation Fibre to the Cabinet ( FTTC ) 'up to' 40Mbps download (5Mbps upload) broadband technology trials. The provider is also upgrading its existing broadband platform to fully support BT's related 21st Century Network (CN) infrastructure.

Hull based ISP Karoo (KCOM, Kingston Communications UK), an incumbent provider that predominantly covers East Yorkshire in the UK, has begun talks with Ofcom that could allow the operator to offer bundled telephone and broadband packages to Hull's residential and business customers.

Broadband vISP TitanADSL has promised to resolve its customer support problems this week after their phone system was taken out of action by "builders cutting through underground cabling". The fault, which caused nearly a month’s worth of support problems, was then exasperated because BT needed to get planning permission from the local council before repairs could be conducted.

Anybody who has spent any amount of time with a UK Mobile Broadband connection knows that reception is one of the most frustrating aspects of the service. Good reception means your operator will switch you to its fastest network platform and be more stable. Bad reception forces you to tolerate slower and increasingly unstable links that have more in common with the Internet of 10 years ago than today.

UK ISP PlusNet has extended its new phone line installations promotion until 31st January 2010. The offer gives a reduced install price of just £49.99 to the providers Home Broadband subscribers and costs less than half of the wholesale cost. The provider claims that there is also no contract and just a 10 day notice period attached.

Mobile operator Three (3) UK is gearing up to introduce a new form of traffic shaping to its mobile data / Mobile Broadband services from Monday of next week. The system will reportedly target file sharing P2P users on its service to help reduce strain on its network.

Apple's latest Mac Operating System (OS) software, 10.6 Snow Leopard, is causing serious problems with many of the USB Modems (Dongles) used by most of the UK's five main Mobile Broadband operators. That is despite Snow Leopard having been around for a good couple of months, which should have been enough time to fix any problems.

The UK government Minister for Digital Britain, Stephen Timms MP, has accepted the Internet Service Providers Association ( ISPA ) invitation to deliver a keynote address at their annual conference. The event itself is being held on Wednesday 2nd December and at the London offices of law firm Bird and Bird.

The latest Point Topic study has cleverly mapped out the phases of BT's £1.5bn next generation broadband ( FTTC , FTTH / P ) deployment and included the projects so far announced by alternative network operators (altnets). This includes the 100Mbps FTTH by i3 Group / H2O Networks in Bournemouth and Dundee etc.

BT Group has released its latest second quarter results to 30th September 2009, which showed that the operators retail ( BT , PlusNet etc. ) broadband ISP subscriber base had increased by +72,000 net additions in the quarter to total 4.9 Million. BT Retail's market share of the DSL and LLU installed base remained at 35%.

UK ISP O2 ( Be Broadband ) has released its latest results to the end of September 2009 (Q3), which saw their total broadband subscriber base climb from 456,882 to 527,126; passing the half a million milestone. This equated to quarterly net additions of +70,244, a significant increase on Q2's additions of just +52,398 (+34.1%).
