The mobile division of Virgin Media , which is based off T-Mobile UK's network , has increased the performance of its Mobile Broadband service up to a maximum of 7.2Mbps. That's impressive considering that T-Mobile's website only pledges to deliver "up to our maximum of 4.5Mbps", though in the real world most mobile operators have enough problems hitting 1-2Mbps.

Virgin states that its new service will allow Mobile Broadband customers to "connect quicker, anywhere, with super fast new 7.2Mb mobile broadband". In fact what they appear to have launched is a new 7.2Mbps capable USB Modem (Dongle).


Virgin Media has refreshed its Mobile Broadband packages to support the new modem, though it will come at extra cost. For example, an 18 month contract based 7.2Mbps package option with a 1GB usage allowance costs £10 per month and £9.99 (one-off) for the USB Modem. For £15 per month you can have a 3GB usage allowance. There are also several more expensive 2 month contract packages.
