As expected they propose to scrap Labour's 50p +vat phone line tax, force BT and other infrastructure providers to open their cable ducts and use part of the BBC TV Licence fee to fund a wider fibre optic broadband rollout.

uSwitch Home Phone Customer Satisfaction Report has named ISP and TV broadcaster Sky ( Sky Broadband ) the '
Best Overall Provider' in their survey with 86% of its customers satisfied. Rival TalkTalk also did well, coming second with 82% of its phone customers satisfied. By contrast Virgin Media came in 3rd with a rating of 80%.

Regulator Ofcom has today set out its approach to drawing up a new code of practice for handling claims of Copyright Infringement (illegal P2P file sharing) by Rights Holders against customers of UK broadband ISPs. The move follows last week's passing of the controversial
Digital Economy Act Bill, which could end up forcing UK Internet providers into disconnecting some of their customers.

Intel and Samsung have officially begun working together to develop the next generation of WiMAX (IEEE 802.16 - Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) wide area high-speed networking technology - WiMAX Release 2 (802.16m). The standard would be backwards compatible with WiMAX and could deliver peak download speeds of up to 300Mbps (maybe even 1Gbps).

Tilly, Bailey and Irvine Solicitors (TBI) has stopped sending out copyright infringement threat letters to broadband ISP customers in the UK because of the "
adverse publicity" it brought . The letters were typically sent to those "

Internet advertising and website search giant Google has joined with UK ISPs, such as TalkTalk and the ISPA UK, to condemn the controversial Digital Economy Bill (DEB), which was passed yesterday as part of parliaments pre-election "wash-up" (rushed) legislation processing. The last minute changes also appear to have allowed the hotly contested website blocking proposals to remain; this would be used against websites and services that allegedly contain copyright infringing material, but could also impact legitimate search engines and sites like YouTube.

The Labour Governments controversial proposal to put a 50p +vat per month tax (
Next Generation Fund) on all fixed phone lines to help fund the rollout of next generation broadband services to 90% of the country by 2017 has been shelved at the last minute. The tax itself was widely disliked and had received stiff opposition from almost all quarters, though without it the government has effectively erased its crucial Next Generation Access (NGA) plans.
