Adam Smith Institute (ASI) - '
Global Player or Subsidy Junkie? Decision time for the BBC' - has been doing the rounds this week after it called for the BBC TV Licence fee to be "
abolished" and for the BBC itself to instead become a "
subscription service". One of several reasons given is that universal UK broadband coverage and the internet will make "
a 'licence' to broadcast obsolete".

Performing Rights Society for Music (PRS), which represents 65,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers, has revealed that the UK music industry was worth a total of £3.9bn last year; up 4.7% on 2008. Not bad considering the economic climate and especially after all the recent claims that "
suspected" illegal P2P file sharing by broadband ISP customers was "
killing" music.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint against an ISP advert in the national press for BT Retail's new up to 40Mbps FTTC based fibre optic broadband service -
BT-Infinity. The advert effectively claimed that BT's new product allowed content, such as high quality videos, to be uploaded and downloaded instantly. This is of course very misleading.

Competition in the UK consumer broadband Satellite internet access market is hotting-up again today after ISP
BeyonDSL announced a new service with download speeds of up to 4Mbps (0.25Mbps uploads) for just £29.99 inc. VAT per month. The package uses ASTRA's (ASTRA2Connect) satellites (23.5E Astra 1E, 1G, 3A) and includes a 2.5GB usage allowance.

BT has hinted that it might bid in Ofcom's late-2011 auctions of crucial 800MHz and 2.6GHz Mobile Broadband spectrum, although the UK telecoms giant admitted that it was "
low down on [its] list of likely things". The 800MHz radio spectrum band is currently used by old analogue Television (TV) signals, which are slowly being switched off.

Broadband ISP supplier Entanet and BT has officially made available a new technology that will allow its resale and wholesale vISP partners to offer faster internet upload speeds. The geeky sounding
Annex M technology runs over BT's 21st Century Network (Wholesale Broadband Connect) and trades off some download speed from existing up to 24Mbps (ADSL2+) connections in order to boost upload performance.

Broadband.co.uk has released its latest anecdotal monthly broadband speed testing results for July 2010, which has seen the average download speed rise from 4.957Mbps in June to 5.106Mbps this month. By comparison Ofcom reported that its average in May 2010 had been calculated as 5.2Mbps (
here), Akamai claimed it was more like 3.8Mbps (
here) and Ookla preferred 7.71Mbps (
here).

Initial Draft Code of Practice for tackling internet copyright infringement by broadband ISP customers. The code is a requirement of the recently passed
